I purchased Pellon batting today and cannot find any information about it on line. . . at the QB, Pellon's website or searching the web.
Anyone ever heard of it - or - worked with it? 100% cotton - 4oz - 1/4" loft - 8-10" quilt spacing Also says "The Magic in the Middle" |
so what more information are you looking for? it sounds as if the information required to use the batting you have---fiber content, weight/loft, and quilting distance.
so what more do you need? it has a scrim- which is why you can quilt so far apart- it washes up nice it is good for machine and hand quilting anything else??? |
I question because I've never heard of it and can't find opinions or info about it.
|
Maybe you can be the first and review it for us! Sounds like a new product, and we are always interested in recommendations from fellow quilters.

I bought this at Jo-Ann's Fabrics. First time I bought cotton batting - I've used polyester before. There were no real instructions on the bag as to step-by-step usage, but it did say that shrinkage would be 3 - 5%, and that it was "washable by hand or machine." Also that it can be used for "quilts of all types." Also, that it had scrim binder included.
In my "Complete Idiot's Guide to Quilting," it said, "Check to see if the cotton batting you are considering needs to be washed." I looked on line and couldn't find any info re this on the Pellon website. Since the batting does shrink, I figured I should prewash it. I did, and it fell apart in the washer. Was I supposed to know not to wash it? If so, how do you deal with the shrinkage? |
Re: when to wash
When you wash batting, it's more of a soaking process than a washing. Did you just run it through the washer? I always just quilt the batting 'raw' and let it shrink in the washer. Never been an issue, and I love the texture and feel of it. |
Thank you, Brynn! Now I know. Yes, I treated the batting like I treat my fabrics - throw it in the washer on hot cycle. Big mistake. But I do think the package should have some sort of instructions for beginners.
I really want to try cotton batting. The Pellon Nature's Touch is made in the USA so I really wanted to use it. Price seemed good and the "scrim binder" seems to be a good idea. Also, I really loved the texture - so pleasant compared to the synthetic. Maybe I'll see if Jo-Ann's will give me a new bag in exchange.... So the shrinkage is not a problem? I am a hand quilter, by the way. |
Anyone else use this yet? I'm in the search for a good batting to use with a flannel quilt top I've almost finished.
|
My local Jo-Ann's Fabrics Store did exchange my ruined-in-the-wash batting for a new bag!

Cathy - are you trying the Pellon again or did you exchange it for something else? If you are using it, let us know what you think! Thanks!

packages of it are on sale in the newest Joanns flyer and it's labeled NEW.
I've heard that you can just spray the batting with water and toss it in the dryer to get it to shrink. Never tried it though - but I do plan to do it this way if necessary. I hope your washer is ok. Maybe we should all email Pellon and tell them what's missing! LOL |

You can't go wrong at that price, it is top quality cotton batting.
|
Sorry, I am not sure my response went through. Natural Touch batting by Pellon is made from super clean - top quality cotton. As a hand quilter, I use batting with no scrim or wool. Machine quilters will love this one.
|
OK...........what about a phone number for Pellon and make a phone call....don't think it should have fallen apart in the wash.....package should have said 'Do not pre-wash'....Pellon is an old company, I personally would have expected better of them..... Please call like the Quilter did with the Hobbs batting.....
|
I used to work closely with the batting division of Hobbs. Email me at [email protected]. As you can see from my email address, I make no secret of who I am. I will work to help you with this porblem.
|
I called Pellon about this batting they said if you plan to wash your finished product you should preshrink it. The correct way to preshrink this batting is to soak it in hot water for 20 minutes - no agitation. Then dry is on high heat in the dryer.

I use it and love it, I have seen no difference between this and warm and natural.

I personally do not pre-wash batting at all. I don't really see the need. I expect there to be some shrinkage and I think it enhances the look of the quilt.

This is my first posting on QB. I have a flyer from Joann's and this batting is on sale for $99.99 for a 25 yard roll. That immediately caught my eye. It goes on sale, one day only, November 21, 2012. I've never used it but did find a few comments on blogs by people who said they liked it. I'm nervous about risking $90.00 (I also get a 10% discount at Joann's from QCA) for something relatively unknown. I've always used Warm and Natural but the price of this looks good. And, it's made in the good old USA! Since the last posting on this thread, has anyone tried it?

Thanks for saying the date.Do you have to have a coupon for it?

I thought this would come in 90 (queen) at least but I just called JoAnns and they said all they had was 60 wide
|
I have used it! I like it too. It feels and acts a lot like Warm and Natural. I had it quilted and didn't think to ask if was any different. She did not comment so I guess she didn't have any big problems. It was cheaper than W&N too.
|
There are two sales of Pellon batting at Joanns. Tues Nov 20 is a 20-yd roll of Siliconized polyester batting that is 60" wide. Wed Nov 21 is a 25-yd roll of cotton batting that is 90" wide. Be conscious of this when calling to check stock on hand; I would think the salespeople could easily confuse them. (Some stores already have less-experienced seasonal employees working). Also, when Joann's has not had sale items in stock, you can usually order it and go ahead & pay the sale price, then just pick it up when the order comes in. I've done this before when Warm & Natural was on sale at a good price.
