Info on printing on fabric
 

I need some info on what I need to do to print a picture on fabric for a quilt square for a memory quilt.Thanks for any help as I am baffled by this.I need to print a picture of my husband who passed away in July on a fabric panel to be worked into a 10"x10" quilt sq. for a Quilt of Love to be displayed for donor family events and programs as he was an organ and tissue donor.

I have use this before - . . . I found that the quality of the fabric upon which you are printing leaves a great dealt o be desired - but I don't know of any other way to get this done. Be prepared to include the edges within a seam - if you fuse and/or embroider over the edge, it will try to ravel on you as the thread count is not very high. I fractured a flower (orchid) and used batik around it on this one-

Make sure you heat set the photo after you copy onto your fabric.

Thanks for that info but how do I get it onto the fabric?

I use the fabric sheets sold at Hobby Lobby. I did one as a gift to my DD's MIL with all her and all her grandchildren. It turned out well and she loved it.

I forgot to say all the instructions on how to print it out is on the package the sheets come in.

You can either use Bubblejet 2000 fabric printing solution and Bubblejet rinse (can buy at Walmart) to prepare you own fabric or buy special fabric made for inkjet printing. If you choose to use Bubblejet solution, after your fabric dries iron an 8 1/2 x 11" piece of fabric to some freezer paper to print in you inkjet printer. Just follow the instructions with the solution. There are a couple of tutes available on Youtube. You can also buy transfer paper to iron on your fabric. Avery makes one that is pretty good. I also use the freezer paper. I cut the freezer paper to a standard piece of printing paper size. Then I cut the plain fabric that I want the pictures on and iron them together, and they go through the printer nicely. You can then do family pictures, etc. also. Be sure to heat set them.

I used the pre treated fabric sheets put out by the Electric quilt company EQ, they were easy to use and seem to be lasting

Here's my suggestions:
When using the bubble jet solution, I try to use 200 count muslin. I think it prints better.
I also treat a piece of fabric slightly larger than 8.5 x 11, then iron it to a piece of freezer paper, then trim both together down to 8.5 x 11 size. That way the edges are well adhered and work thru the ink jet well. My other thought: if using a commercially prepared product, besure to check to see if it is washable, if you might have to wash the project. Wishing you well on this project.

I had to make some quilt labels to attach to some quilted bears...my printer refused to accept the fabric/paper...so, had to go to a print shop to make them.

Great information. I want to do a picture pillow for my daughter. I wanted to use 3 1/2 squares with pictures and fabric. I think I may try the Bubble Jet.

Remember (most of the fabric you buy tells you this) you need to use an ink jet printer NOT A LASER. Caryl Bryer Fallert has some good info on her website
