Happy Labor Day!!

I am working on a quilt for my nephew and his wife's baby due in December. I wanted to do something that would have a little vintage feel. I saw a quilt on the internet with hour glass that I really liked - now I am trying to decide if these colors all work or if I should just lean towards one or two of the colors. I don't have the print fabric cut. I just have the hour glass blocks sitting on top of the yardage. What do you guys think? All of the colors in the hourglass blocks mixed together? Or should I just lean towards on color set? Or start all over with something different? :) :)

thanks

i vote for the last layout

I lean toward the blues one. In the photo it looks like the black is too black on the brown sampling. My baby quilts tend to be simple. I might try the solids only and let the baby print be the only print. But photos are deceptive sometimes.

If you are going for the vintage look I would use them all. Post pics when you decide which way to go.

I like the scrappy last one. I am assuming it is going to be a boy? A lot of masculine colors there..

I like the second picture best as the values seem best against the patterned fabric. If I was going to use all the colours, I would eliminate the darkest brown and blue from the other hourglasses.

I, also vote for the last on. Cute pattern for the babe!

As far as the hour-glass blocks go - they catch my eye first and the little animal print is secondary.

Of the four options shown, I like the ones using green best - because the hour-glass blocks do not overwhelm the little animal print and it is a softer look.

I think the brown, taupe, and rust hour-glass is too "heavy/harsh" to go with that print.

My thoughts ..... I like the last combination with all the colors.

Cute childen's print. The quilt layout looks great, and bet the new mother will like it for her new baby. Baby will like it too! I also like the Blue as others have voted.
Happy sewing!

I agree. I wish the hourglass blocks could be smaller than the animal print blocks - but I don't know how to go about doing that

Thanks everyone for your thoughts. I am processing :)

Any combination except the first one. It is simply too high in contrast by itself. My preference is the last one.

I like a more controlled look, like the second or third one. But it will be cute in any of them!!!

Anniedeb 09-04-2017 06:07 PM

My 2 cents is I like the last one. I think the solids pull the colors from the print and make them pop. It will be adorable!

I like the green best, the others seem to jump out at you & over power the design. The green seems to flow with the print nicely.

I like the last layout best. I generally use a solid (or small print that 'reads' solid) to 'pull' colors from a larger print/design. I also think your background print is very 'vintage' looking.

As to making your hourglass blocks smaller...I 'think' if you measure out from the center of those blocks whatever distance you decide, then trim on all four sides, you can get to a smaller size without having to re-do all of those blocks. You could sash those smaller hourglass blocks with your background fabric to make the background more prominent?? Just be careful as it appears to be somewhat directional??

What cute print! Of the 3 colorways presented, I like the green best. The brown/rust is too heavy and becomes the focus. Second choice is the blue but I'd use a lighter blue than the dark one. It must be the darker colors that I don't care for in this setting. They seem to take away from the print and my eye goes to the dark color.

Innov8R 09-05-2017 03:37 AM

Definitely the green.

earthwalker 09-05-2017 03:43 AM

Green or the blue, the first one is too jarring and the last one is overpowering.

SusieQOH 09-05-2017 03:47 AM

You chose such a darling print!! My vote is blue. It really brings out the prints.

youngduncan 09-05-2017 03:52 AM

I like all of your layouts, but my favorite is the last one -- the one with all of your blocks set at different angles. It seems to be a little more vintage than the others. Your fabric choices are really terrific.

Reba'squilts 09-05-2017 03:53 AM

The third one for sure! Things have to be in a certain order for me, I think it is OCD!

Waal 09-05-2017 05:42 AM

Definitely the green. It blends so well.

kat13 09-05-2017 08:37 AM

Babies love colors so I would do the last one!!

When/If you use the hour-glass units - be aware of the secondary patterns that they might make.

My personal preference is to use an even x even or odd x odd arrangement.

Attached are some examples:

bearisgray 09-05-2017 08:46 AM

The differences:

The first is just the black and white drawing.

Differences in the colored drawings:

1) Light green triangle is always on top.

2) All the same color triangles are "framing" the square

3) Odd columns: Dark green is on top
Even columns: Dark green is on the right

4) As random as I could do

Jingle 09-05-2017 12:35 PM

I like the last picture best.

meyert 09-05-2017 02:37 PM

Thank you for your detailed reply! very helpful

Jannie 09-05-2017 05:26 PM

I like a controlled look and would go with the blue. If I was doing it, I would have all the light blue frame one block and the next one with all the dark blue, etc. It will be a cute quilt no matter what you decide.

illinois 09-06-2017 03:51 AM

If you are still considering that the hourglass blocks are too big, have you considered cutting them down, perhaps a bit wonky and framing them with sashing/triangles to square them up again? It would lend a bit of whimsy to a child's quilt.

Kas 09-06-2017 08:51 PM

I like the green best, then the blue. I really feel the darker green clashes.

maryellen2u 09-06-2017 10:47 PM

I love your fabrics and layouts. I like the idea that it is not a cutesy blue and pink. I do think the black and dark brow are too intense. They don't say baby to me, hehehe!
