Inquiring minds want to know !

What are crumb quilts????

Cybrarian 02-25-2012 04:12 PM

Thanks for asking, I'm not clear on that either!

little bitty pieces of fabric - usually abut 2" up in size. Use for miniature and or small piece blocks.

ckcowl 02-25-2012 04:22 PM

crumbs are little scraps-people (often) use a foundation and stitch their little scraps to the foundation-put them all together and they have a 'crumb quilt'

Anyone have a picture of one, love to see one.

that depends on who you ask. At my one group we sew for the children's hospice. We take the smaller pieces people donate and then take a strip of fabric, any size strip we have and start sewing the small pieces to it. THen those are cut apart and sewn to another strip. and so it goes until we have blocks about 6-8" usually. TONS of mindless sewing which is good they way those get to yacking..hehehe

I've been happily playing in my scraps and started out to make a crumb quilt, inspired by Bonnie Hunter (http://quiltville.blogspot.com/2005/...bs-crumbs.html ) and by a "Crumb Along with Me" project on the blog Jo's Country Junction (
http://www.joscountryjunction.com/?page_id=4906
). Check both of those links to see great examples of crumb quilts. On Jo's blog she has links to postings by others who are doing her crumb-along.

I just couldn't get into sewing pieces together randomly so I started making four-patches or wonky flying geese, log cabins, etc. It's been a lot of fun and I made all kinds of silly things as well as some traditional blocks. Yesterday I posted a request for help picking colors for sashings:
http://www.quiltingboard.com/main-f1...e-t180521.html. Got some great suggestions. Since then, I've made about 15 more blocks, trying to work in more blue and other colors to help balance out all the red. But still, lots of red, white and blue blocks!

I tend to cut up my scraps periodically into 2.5 inch strips or squares for a couple of scrappy projects I have in mind. The little bits left over...smaller than 2.5 inches or odd shaped, I throw in the crumb drawer. I also have strings that are narrow and long in another drawer. I've used a bunch of crumbs and strings and did dip into my 2.5 inch strips and a little bit of stash for variety.

Lots of fun but you have to let go of all the "rules" and just play!

I made one I call a confetti quilt, but the idea is similar, although all my pieces are spread out...

Here's a picture of a crumb quilt I made last year. I added flower embroideries in the plain blocks. I keep anything bigger than 1.5" x 1.5"...simply sew two little pieces together and keep adding pieces until you get something bigger than the block you want (my blocks were 6.5" unfinished)...then take your ruler and trim down to the block size you want. :)

here is a great little tutorial I like!

http://quiltingisstillmypassion.blog...-tutorial.html She calls them 'mile a minute blocks' now, but if I remember right, she called it a crumb block when she 1st posted it...WAY back when!

Thanks Anita, both of those sites were interesting and helpful. What a nice way to use up scraps on a rainy day.

Crumbs are just plain FUN.

This is my crumb quilt, I had some leftover log cabin blocks that I used along with the crumb blocks. Sorry I can't find a picture of it in my photo albums, but here it is in Webshots.

They are really fun to make and a great way to use some of those little scraps. I like to take a day now and then to make crumb blocks. It is stress free since anything goes and when you have enough you can make a quilt

Thanks to all of you kind quilters for enlightening me I will now start my own "crumb saving box" cause it looks like a whole lot of fun and with fabric prices going up along with everything else .Enjoyed seeing allthe beautiful quilts made with scrapes that I no longer will throw away. Thanks again!

How about the technique of sewing these crumbs on to a 6" pre cut sq.(or any sz. you want) out of muslin. This tech. you start in the middle. Then trim it to sz. there would be pc. hanging out all over. Is this the same general idea ?? I know this is a different process but the crumbs would still get used. Just a thought.;)Rowena101

Wow! I have been doing this for years -- sewing up scraps, then cutting them into squares. Now I know the name for for the process. I love it when I find out these things. I have not put them all together into a quilt yet; but will continue me a crumb drawer. (now that I know the name. Thanks everyone for sharing. I just keep learning things. Teresa

Yes in my opinion. Really it looks just like a 'crazy quilt' patch only using much smaller pieces of fabric. If I did make a small one I would definitely use muslin and/or paper as a foundation in order to eliminate stretching.

Here is a link to the tutorial I made to show how I use up my scraps! Hope this helps everyone! :)
