What is a Fat Quarter?
A half yard of fabric cut on the fold to produce a wider yield. How big is a fat quarter? 18 inches by 22 inches (approximately) What can be cut from a Fat Quarter? 99 – 2 " sq. 56 – 2 1⁄2 sq. 42 – 3 : sq. 30 – 3 1⁄2" sq. 20 – 4 " sq. 16 – 4 1⁄2" sq. 12 – 5 : sq. 9 – 6 : sq. 6 – 6 1⁄2" sq. |
That's good to know. Thanks for the info!

You should be aware that some of those yields will be off if a) the fat quarter is prewashed and shrinks or ravels at all and/or b) the fat quarter was not cut accurately and you have to square it up. Watch out especially for the 2", 3", 4½", and 6" squares.

Thanks for sharing. That is always good to know. I'm going to copy that and put it in my wallet for future use. :-D

They can be off too if you they have used 42" wide fabric, then you get 18 X 21
|
Interesting. I never got past the measurements of a fat quarter. Thanks for sharing the info.
|
A fat quarter is 1/4 of a yard, i.e. a yard cut into 4 quarters, not a 1/2 yard.

If I find a fat quarter print I really like I always buy atleast two.
Also with our little group of quilters when one of us goes on a trip and goes to a quiltshop We find a neat fabric and buy a yard and pick up a few of the shops cards and make fat quarters and give then to our little group. We get a fat quarter and also with the business card we know where it came from. Its fun and a nice way to remember a trip |
