I'm interested in making a t-shirt quilt for my niece for her graduation. She graduates in 2 weeks, so perhaps by her sophomore year in college I can have it done!! :oops:

Anyway, I have some sites bookmarked and a couple books at home on t-shirt quilts and now that I've decided I want to do one, I need to buy some interfacing.

So...this is where all the materials I've read on the subject gets funny. While all resources agree that interfacing is needed for t-shirt quilts, not 2 in the whole bunch agree as to what kind.

So....some questions for you guys out there.

Is fusible better? Does it have to be thick? Will it be hard to sew through when I'm piecing them together? Do they make a soluble kind? Will the extra interfacing on the tshirts make the quilts heavier? I plan on quilting in the normal cotton fabrics only and embellishing with buttons through the entire sandwich on the t-shirt portions.

What do you guys think? I got a 60% off Joann's coupon that I hope to use on a bolt of interfacing.

I would use a fusible type. It is not too heavy but it will add a slight weight. It will keep the knit from stretching when you add your sashing. It is not hard to sew through. I would not use a soluble type because you want the stabilization forever. I am doing one now and it is going smoothly.

I didn't know a friend of mine was doing one. She brought it over tonight and it's kinda thin, and fusible. It is gridded so you can make sure it's going on the straight of the shirt and you can square it up easier. Very cool stuff. That's what I'm going to buy.
