I would like to machine stitch around my pond pals and then big hand stitch
I would like to use a clear thread as I`ve already done blanket stitch. I know not to use ivisible on a baby quilt but is there anything else thats clear?

If you have thread that matches, you can straight stitch around each patch. As far as I know there isn't a clear thread that I would use for a baby quilt.

You could use a 100 wt silk in a sage or gray color. It should almost disappear. Many folks recommend it for needle turn applique. No reason you can't use it for quilting.

Why aren't you supposed to use invisible on a baby quilt? I must have been in quilter's jail the day the quilt police announced that law.

Nylon/clear thread doesn't break and a baby can wrap a stray thread around their finger and loose said finger. Same thing with tied quilts, the tie needs to be short enough not to wrap completely around fingers.

I can't use clear thread at all! How is it to be used? I can't manage it but would love to use it if I could see it. It is invisible after all!

Superior threads have a great invisible thread its .004, but it is polyester,

Also their Bottom Line in the colour "silver" is almost undetectable and I have used it alot for applique.

It would also look very cute with black thread blanket stitched around all your pals, definitely makes them stand out. Cute quilt, will look great no matter what you choose. Have fun with it, it's a fun quilt.

What I have is four spools of nylon (I was overly optimistic) but couldn't even thread the stuff on my machine. I have ordered the MonoPoly as recommended but am wondering if it will be better. Maybe it is just me. How do you see invisible thread to work with it? :) Any hints as to how to use it will be greatly appriciated...

I have the Superior Threads Polyester, but found it kept breaking in the machine so I gave up. I must be doing something wrong because Alex Anderson uses it for her applique. I would love to know the secret.

The invisible thread is hard to see but it has a shine to it so you can "see" it while using it. Once you step back from it, though, it disappears. While you're quilting or appliqueing pieces down with it--it might be easier to look for the needle holes instead of the thread for some people.

You definitely have to play with tension on many machines to use the invisible thread. And much of it will whiplash so it needs a thread net or I put it in a coffee mug behind my machine. Some stick a piece of batting in the first thread loop to "tame" the thread. Winding it for bobbins is a pain, too. Slowly is the best advice I can offer for that or just using a silver embroidery thread instead of trying to use invisible in the bobbin.

The more I type about invisible thread, the more I'm liking the idea of putting a black blanket stitch around the critters--LOL!

Bottom Line has been invisible in my work; am devoted to his light green - which never shows, no matter what I use it for - same with Silver or his light beige.

Use invisible thread on top only with matching backing thread on bobbin for SID. Gives puckering look and support with out seeing stitched on top. Sort of hard to work with but can give nice effect. Hard to use on free motion since you can not see stitches on top.
