I am getting ready to make an Irish Chain and have noticed in several patterns the block sizes differ. Suggestions on what you size you have used 2 1/2 or 3 1/2 inch strips?? The EB book suggests the larger.

I used 2 1/2" strips for mine. I think it's a personal preference.

The larger would go quicker if you were making a big quilt. I think I used 2 1/2 for mine which you can see here:

I think I used the 2 1/2 inch strips too....it was years ago.

I'm having fun doing a scrappy one using 2" blocks.

Just like any pattern, it really depends on what you like to work with, and the look you'd like with the end results.
IMHO the smaller squares look so much more delicate, and intricate and show your work beautifully, and yes, more tedious. Whereas .... the larger are more clunky, work up quicker and because of their size don't seem as intimidating or are as difficult to work with. You can even use smaller squares than the ones you mentioned. I've seen many that start with 1-1/2", so it's really up to you and what you want to do, as you can use any pattern, just change the size .... and of course, the fabric requirements will be affected. Good Luck!! |
i used 1 1/2" for my kids quilt- it depends on your preference, how big you want the quilt to be, what you want to work with.

Find a photo you like and then decide.
