Iron without auto shutoff?
Is there a steam iron out there that does not have an auto shut off? I know it's a safety feature but I don't like it.

I have a little travel iron without auto shut off. I have it sitting next to my sewing machine when I piece. (I use the big auto shut off iron for ironing big pieces of fabric or clothes). I do, though, have the small travel iron attached to the same extension cord that a light is attached too. I turn both on together. So I know if the light is on, the iron is too. That way it's easy to remember to turn it off, because I wouldn't leave a light when I left the room! :)

okie2tx, don't know what you want to spend but this iron has the option to turn off the auto off feature.

Cheap irons don't have auto shut off. Look for ones under $20.

Reliable makes an iron where you can override the auto shut off by holding the steam button in till the lights blink. Then it stays on till you turn it off.
I've had it about a year. It's a great iron. It's the orange one they sell. |
I use the cheap irons. I don't like the auto shut off either.

I use to have one but they are hard to find now. I have a Black and Decker one now and it tends to start beeping at me that it's shutting down and i'm ironing!!! moving the iron yet and it says I'm not. STupid iron. I lift the iron point up toward the ceiling and that makes it happy. Hope you find one smarter than I did.

In addition to my Rowenta's I have a EuroPro iron that I purchased at a quilt show years ago. No auto shutoff, huge amounts of steam (does require distilled water). It was expensive but it has been a great iron.
I agree with the suggestion of the iron plugged into the same source as your light. Myself, though, I always unplug my iron whenever I leave the area. I iron clothes as well, so have a couple of different areas where I iron things. As well as having animals. I'm always afraid that one of them will walk by a cord and pull the iron off it's surface and possibly turn it on. Thus unplugging each time. And my fireman DH really appreciates the habit! |
Many of the older shut offs work on a level type thing. I took an iron apart and found it out how it works. Keep the nose of the iron pointed down, think sitting on a wedge, and the shut off won't come on.

I don't like the auto shut off either. You can find them. Seems like my last one came from Walmart.
|
So far I've gotten my irons used, at yard sales. They are so old they don't have auto shut off. I didn't even know it existed until recently. I unplug the iron completely when I am not using it.

I ordered this one from Amazon. It's my second one of this brand. I used the first one for years before it finally stopped heating up. http://www.amazon.com/Continental-El...ntinental+iron
It's a dry iron and doesn't have auto shutoff. I'm pretty sure I got the first one from Always Free Shipping. |
I have dropped my iron so many times, I only use the heat no steam and I like it. Never really used steam when it worked. I like my iron but the heat gauge is unreadable... so have to guess where I want the setting. And then I have one from an aunt who passed, but that is on my big table(8x8) other room. I too have a routine when leaving a room. I count as I start turning things off or unplugging them. 1 machine, 2 music 3 iron 4 big light 5 laptop & 6 room light. If I miss a number I know I missed something. This is just my way of making sure things are OFF.

Mine is a Proctor Silex. Model 17135 Series A0890DA. It stays on as long as I need it to be.
kristijoy...mine is attached to a light also. So nice, as I get older I can forget stuff sometimes. |
I bought a dry iron from 'Country something'. I think someone here will know the magazine i'm talking about. it doesn't have auto shutoff. I also have a Reliable orange iron that you can override the shutoff. Someone else said they had it, too. The steam on that is absolutely crazy. I love it when I need steam.
But I bought one of those irons that have a separate tank for water and that's my favorite. The iron is light weight, which I love because my hand doesn't get tired if I'm ironing a bunch. It, of course, has no auto shutoff. I use this one all the time. It's a DeLonghi. You can get these kinds of irons (with separate tanks) on ebay for around $150. Mine has lasted for years. Oh, I think the magazine I got the dry iron from is Country Store. Yep, that's it. i had a senior moment. Sorry. |
sorry, it's not a Black and Decker. I knew that didn't sound right. Mine is a Hamilton Beach that wants to shut off when in use.

Some of the cheap irons do, indeed, have auto shut off. To me, the auto-shut off is a super safety feature that no iron should be without. But we all have our preferences and reasons for them.
|
Sorry, I have left my iron on more than once and I am delighted with the auto shut off on my Rowenta.
|
I can''t imagine having an iron without the automatic shut off. I have heard too many horror stories of homes burning down from an iron that was left on. I just can't trust myself to remember to turn it off or unplug it every time. Good luck with your search.

My Euro does not have an auto shutoff. That is one of the many reasons I love it. Someone else said you must use distilled water. My instructions say that I can use filtered water too. I just use the water that comes out of my refrigerator dispenser.

I bought a travel iron at Goodwill that does not automatically shut off. It is perfect to sit next to my sewing machine and use on either my round-about or small ironing board. I have it on an extension cord plugged into the same outlet with my lights and sewing machine, so when I quit sewing, I flip the switch and everything goes off at once. That way I don't have to remember to shut it off. GW is a great source for irons. This little travel iron was an older one, but it was brand new in the box. I also bought a brand new (I think Panasonic) iron that can be used corded or cordless at GW but it has the auto shut off so, like kristijoy, I use it to iron big pieces of fabric or clothing.

I don't use steam but in regard to auto off or stay on irons, I have one that stays on and would not like an auto turn off. My iron is plugged in a power strip, which currently has a bright light also plugged to power strip so if I leave the room I know to turn off power strip. In the past have used a night light or a portable radio to help me remember to turn off power strip, which turns off iron. Was anyone else taught to not use steam when piecing because moisture left on fabric causes stretch of fabric. If I need moisture to press flat I use a mister of water or magic sizing which I can press dry before stitching Best wishes in all your quilting and I am amazed by your many accomplishments and talents

I hate auto shut off. I get an inexpensive iron from Walmart for $10 to $20. Right now I have a Proctor Silex which is a gem. They last several years and I replace them. I have a shutdown procedure so I have never left one on yet.
|
I am not a fan of the Auto -shut off , but have to admit it has saved me on more than a few occasions.

I have the Black and Decker classic. Nice heavy iron. No auto shut off. Love it

I have the cheap Rival Iron from Wal-Mart, and it doesn't shut off automatically. Sometimes I DON'T like this, because I've left it on overnight, and/or when leaving the house. Scary!! I need one WITH an Auto Shut-Off! LOL
