My friend and I made ours without a pattern. We decided the size we wanted, we are both 5'9" so went with 48 inches long (because we wanted it to fit a minimum of a width of fabric) and 24 inches across. Then we placed our ironing boards on top of the piece of plywood, drew the outline on the plywood, then nailed a 1 x1 board on the outline, so the ironing board will be held in place. We actually glued and nailed the 1x1's in place. Then we used a double layer of cotton batting, glued it lightly on the top, stapled it over the edge, then added the cotton fabric over the batting. We put it on using a basting glue so it would stay in place while we stapled it down. We also used a "finishing" trim to hold the fabric on the under side, on 3 sides. We considered just making the cover the a draw string, but felt it may not stay as well, and we could always do that later when the over one will need to be replaced (which will be years from now). Plywood comes in various thickness, so we used 1/2 inch, otherwise it was going to be too heavy.
I still want to find the iron holder to go on the end of the ironing board, haven't done it yet.
