I just got back from a Restore Type place near our home. I bought an old wood door, flat, nothing on it, for $10.00. I am going to have it cut down and make my bigger ironing board from it! Can someone tell me the name of the batting type stuff with the silver on it. That is what I am going to use to cover it. Is it a good idea or should I just use a heavier batting and muslin? I am so excited I found this door, had to share with my quilting board family!

Yay!! The batting is called Insul-brite.

It's called insul-brite by the Warm Company. You can buy it at www.beautifulquiltfabric.com. You should still add a layer of batting.

btw I used the insul-brite and plain quilting cotton on my big ironing board When I made my little one I used one layer of insul-brite, one layer of duck cloth, and the cotton fabric on top of it.

Would the insul-brite be the first to go down next to the wood or the regular batting?

Mine just has batting and muslin on it and it is terrific!

If you use both I would put the insul brite directly under the topping fabric. Because you want that reflectiveness from it to make your ironing more effective.

I would say duck cloth instead of the silver stuff. If your anything like me I make a mess..easier and cheaper to recover. For reflective..I used plain ole' tinfoil underneath my ironing board then the batting and then the duck. But I want a bigger surface. Using a door is a very good idea. I have two in the garage. =)

Ronna, I always wondered if tinfoil could make the board too hot and maybe burn/melt fabric? Have you had any problems? Cyn
