I was having one of those days yesterday where I felt like being in my sewing room, but couldn't decide what to work on. Too many WIPs, I guess. So I grabbed my scrap bin and started ironing my scraps and sorting them. I have never ever done this before. In fact, I never iron unless it involves sewing. My kids were weirded out, and I could hear them laughing and saying they wished Dad were here to see it.
Anyone else ever do this? |
Last fall I spent two days ironing scraps. It was tking up too much room and I brought the size of it down to 1/3 of the pile I had and now I know exactly what I have. It makes perfect sense to me.

yes, it saves room and you reaaly SEE the fabric again and may get inspired! Now if you were ironing the cat or something then I'd be worried.
I have done that, and when sorted them discovered that I had enough to made two lap quilts in the Log Cabin block!
I spent a couple of days cutting my scraps into 5 inch squares and other usable strips if too small for squares. It was a good move cause I then made a charms quilt and used alot of the squares.
Why not. If it makes you happy and you get reacquainted with your scraps all is good. Who knows, it may inspire and beautiful scrappy quilt for you.
This is the perfect way to find out what you have and perhaps think of a great new idea for a quilt. You have to remember, your kids will only be a clever as you are when they are over 30, so let them laugh now, because one day you will be able to see them doing then, what you do now.

here are some patterns to help you work your scraps into!!!!

I've ironed all my scraps, too, partly to prep for a Scrap Therapy class I took several weeks ago but also because I don't like wrinkled fabric, scraps or no.
Sometimes you just need to touch some fabric to make your day.
I am getting ready to do just that! Don't make me feel weird! I already do that on my own!
I find that ironing relaxes me - especially at the end of the day when the kids are in bed and the news on. I iron my sheets and pillowcases. I had never thought about ironing scraps, but I think I will do that tonight!

My aunt (another quilter) is a firm believer that true quilters have to often touch, play with, and pet their fabric. So ironing scraps satisfies our need to do such a thing, right?
Oooh, I bet they are pretty now. I sorted my huge scrap basket by color a couple of weeks ago. It's been so helpful! I'm using more scraps.
I just ironed a bunch of scraps as I began my scrappy BOM's!! Loved it.
I don't see anything strange about ironing your scraps at all!! I need to do it some day soon myself!! Besides I bet it saves a lot of room in your scrap bin...
