I have mixed feelings about painting old machines even though I think they are cute!

I like pink, but that is a bit much.

dkabasketlady 10-10-2010 07:36 AM

Pink's not my color!! I'm waiting for my DM's and she better NOT paint it before I get it!!

CarrieAnne 10-10-2010 07:38 AM

Very pretty! I love pink, lol!

yes, lighter would be much easier on the eyes! These machines are great machines, but they are so unattractive in the black. Lighter colors are easier on the eyes.

I saw it when it was first listed and I like it but then I have always loved pink and turquoise.

I LOVE pink, but this is too much pink for me!

fabric_fancy 10-10-2010 06:42 PM

i can live with altering the vintage machines but that color is not for me.

i prefer classic over trendy

Me too, I have always thought the same way -
until I was given BFF's great-grandmother's old Singer. It was in very fine condition until Hurricane Rita, when the house it was in got roof damage. They got it out as soon as they could and put it in the garage. That was 5 years ago or so.
Now it has blistering and eruptions of the original paint job, and I'm afraid there is no salvation other than a repaint.
So in this case, I'm glad to know at least it can be made whole again, even if in a new "dress" - !
.

Sometimes on the common machines a repaint will make it worth a lot more than it would be if it were left original. Take the FW's, you cant touch a repaint for under $600 hardly and the 66's that I redo I get anywhere between $250 to $375 for them and cant keep enough on hand to keep the quilt shops and the customers happy.

But on the rare machines I dont care if there is just a speck of decal left, just preserve what is there and be the custodian of the machine. There is a fine line between destroying history and enhancing it.

I agree with Billy regarding very old or rare machines being left "as is" with just maintenance and good care. But I love these custom paint jobs on the less precious machines. Can't say I am crazy about pink, but purple, green, black...metallic or pearl finish...well I think they are fantastic. Must also admit to admiring the "pared back" look of a machine Billy posted earlier this year, it was stripped entirely before painting and it looked really good in the raw state. It was stunning when painted, but that stripped look was very appealing.
