Yellow is not my favorite color, either! However, I do like the Sunshine on a Cloudy Day quilt that was a request.
One was requested from another dear friend at the Christmas party the other night. It was not that difficult. I watched a YT video that helped. |

I ran across this quilt the other day and thought what a good idea to use up some of my strips and yardage. You would have to have medium intense valued colors to stand up to the vibrancy of the yellows.

;) What about the wrong side of the yellow fabric? Sometimes using the wrong side of the fabric can be the color you prefer the most, or may be a little less bright.

This is the Pinterest pic that she fell in love with. I referenced it when choosing colors. I can't find the video that helped, but the part that helped was The Sun. I cut a paper circle template and marked the center. Aim the Rays to the center of the sun. I would cover the opening with the template to make sure that the Rays were covered by the Sun. For the sun, I stitched the 2 pieces of circle, turned right side out, and closed the opening. I topstitched it on top of the finished rays. I think I also used backside of yellows for some rays! |
Jordan Fabrics has a video on YouTube for “Mirror Mirror” that uses two colors. It sounds like you may not have enough contrast in your yellow strips but you could always swap out a few from your stash to fill in the shades you need.

I was never a fan of yellow for my quilts until I made a Kaffe Fassett pattern. It called for a lot of yellow. I thought "Yuck. I don't think I want that much yellow" and so put in less. When I got done I realized that the yellow really added a lot to the quilt and I wished I'd used more of it. Now I don't hesitate to put yellow in my quilts.

When you say yellow and black strips, I think of this quilt, which is very attractive. You would have to buy at least 1/2 yd. of solid white and 1/2 a yd. of solid black for this to work. It looks complicated, but in reality is easy to make.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x1Ej...l=MissouriStar Or if you want something really easy to make you can make something like this by just alternating the black and yellow srips on the outside strip, and instead of using a center 5" charm square, you would substitute that with a 2 1/2" block you cut off your strips, and the surround the center block with a white 1 1/2" strip as shown. You would still need to get some solid white background fabric for surrounding your center square block, and samm white border around the whole quilt. (maybe 1 1/2 to 2 yards of white) Also, it is not necessary to add the colored fabric borders she has on the quilt.
