I love putting the binding on!

grunny 07-17-2011 04:49 AM

I don't mind doing the binding. It means I am just that much closer to being finished with the quilt, so, I can move on to the next one. Maybe you need to find someone to give you a quick leson on doing the binding so you won't mind doing it so bad. Hang in there!

Sewlmatesister 07-17-2011 04:49 AM

NO! I love binding, and i'd even do it for you if you were close enough!!! LOL

Annie68 07-17-2011 04:53 AM

Nope, binding is my favorite part!

Nope, sorry, binding is the easy part.

SharonTheriault 07-17-2011 05:16 AM

I love to do the binding. I do it in the evenings when I'm watching... listening... to the tv. It's relaxing to me.

Susie (aka "Frustrated Binder")

My guild made a lot of charity quilts. I made quite a few of the tops and designed some of the patterns. I also did a majority of the binding. Seems I'm the only one in the guild who didn't freak out.

Jo Mama 07-17-2011 05:43 AM

I like to bind. It's someting I can do while watching TV and not have to think too hard..

I love binding, and it's SO easy to do by machine, which is how I sew it down for charity quilts. For quilts going to someone special, I hand stitch the binding. I have 9 different ways to make binding more interesting. Choosing the fabric(s) is the funnest part, it just frames and finishes the quilt!! I take (too much) pride in perfect corners...which is silly since they're so easy to make :?

Marlene1 07-17-2011 07:12 AM

Susan,

Can you give us a tutorial on how you were taught to get great corners? Thanks! Marlene

Jennifer22206 07-17-2011 07:20 AM

I love love love to bind!! I'll quilt all summer long, and love to bind in the winter. :) I bind all year long really, but I get a TON done in the winter.

It's just so relaxing.

I love the hand stitching on the back too. I guess I am just one of the weird ones as far as the binding goes. I hope you will keep trying, and soon you will enjoy framing your beautiful work of art.

Ditto..love doing them!!

I tried a new method to avoid applying the narrow binding.

It is sometimes called "inside-out" or for whatever reason, "the birther method".

.....You sew the batting around the edges to the wrong side of the quilt top
.....Then place the right side of the backing to the right side of the quilt top and sew seams but leave an opening in the bottom of it about 7-10 inches.
.....Then put your hand up the opening and pull out the right side of the quilt, tack up the opening after you have reversed it.

I have my son's quilt almost done and it looks good. I left a little extra batting to extend beyond the top (about 1/2 in) and when I pulled it right side out, the batting made a puffy ridge which I then sewed about 1/2 to 3/4 inch away from the edge and it almost looks like a binding.

The next quilt I do like this to avoid a binding will have a border added on and then I am going to add another piece that will be a different color and simulate a binding there. These two added borders can then be top-stitched individually and make it look even more like an added-on binding.

It was fun to make and much quicker. But you must be careful to have your quilt and all your seams exact so the quilt forms a perfect rectangle or square when turned out.

I will post a px of my first quilt made this way after I do a little remaining SID on it. Pauline

I don't mind binding, I just do it my way, and it looks just fine. If people don't like it - they don't have to look at it. It also means that I won't give them a quilt. People need to appreciate the gift, not the perfection.

IAmCatOwned 07-17-2011 08:08 AM

Well, that's weird. It's my favorite part. So relaxing. What part of binding don't you like and maybe we can suggest an alternative. :)

My hand sewing has always left a lot to be desired. But give me a sewing machine & I can do anything! So I do understand you about sewing bindings. Since I found this method my bindings have improved. http://tlcstitches.blogspot.com/2010...-tutorial.html It is done entirely by machine. Maybe give it a try?

happymrs 07-17-2011 08:15 AM

I do mine all by mine, if I decide to use it at all. Can't see no reason to spend forever, doing it by hand. Works for me! Find a way that works for you & use it, no quilt police, remember. Quilting is suppose to be fun & relaxing, so keep that in mind too...

cassie69emt 07-17-2011 08:47 AM

I absolutely LOVE binding.I can sit with my loving husband while he watches tv. I have actually done binding for others and they can not understand WHY I love doing it so much .I am very reasonable in price too.

I like this. I'll try this on my next one. Binding is the one thing that drives me bonkers and sometimes I think it is all in my head, which should be a good thing because there isn't much else in my head. Kidding aside, this sounds like a great idea and I'm going to try it. Many thanks.

LindaDeeter 07-17-2011 09:02 AM

Binding is the home stretch!! You get there, you're almost finished! Don't give up at that point - we're not quitters, we're quilters! Just get it done and you'll have such an incredible feeling of satisfaction!

misoop 07-17-2011 09:29 AM

No, I actually enjoy doing the binding. :) Different strokes for different folks.

trolleystation 07-17-2011 10:38 AM

Pay it forward.....I will bind a quilt for free for the tenth person to contact me. You pay the postage. PM me.

quiltymom 07-17-2011 11:18 AM

From another Susie I hate it to!!!!!

QuiltnCowgirl 07-17-2011 11:25 AM

I think that those of us who don't like doing the binding are trying to say that it is not the binding itself that we don't like doing, it is the hand sewing part of it that we do not like. I for one would like nothing more than to be able to sit & watch TV in the evening with my dear husband and sew on a binding. However, with my crappy handsewing abilities (there I said it), I am never going to enjoy the fairy tale of sitting & watching TV with my dear husband, yada yada. So, I sew that sucker entirely by machine so I can finish up in my sewing room & still have time in the evening to watch some TV with my husband.

sammy89 07-17-2011 11:29 AM

for me binding is my favorite i lov sitting on my couch watch TV and stitch away

Pieceful Quilter 07-17-2011 12:00 PM

I do not enjoy the hand sewing either. But I don't like the alternative either - machine stitched binding. I mostly don't like the hand sewing because of my arthritic hands. I can do maybe two or three needles of thread, and then have to stop for the day.

I have done a few gift and charity quilts and mug rugs with machine binding, but it doesn't make me as proud of my work...

ScubaK 07-17-2011 12:06 PM

I will do the machine binding if it is to be a very used, daily quilt. If it is a special quilt then I do the binding by hand.

I use to hate binding and when anything I entered in the fair always came back saying binding need improvements then finally I took a class from Cody Mazaron author of a fine finish now bindings are my favorite part and I can also win ribbons

Have you seen the binding thingy? I am not sure what the real name is. Here it is.

I sew to the back and machine stitch to the front. I used to be scared to try it but after I practiced on scraps the same thickness of the project I found out it was not so bad. I just finished a baby quilt that way and after I washed it, it looked just fine. Try out different methods on some scraps.

imaquilternga 07-17-2011 01:33 PM

Me too! I've got a table runner that's been ready to bind for at least 3 months & somehow just can't force myself to get to it.

quiltwiz 07-17-2011 03:03 PM

I love to bind quilts...probably because I love hand applique and making small stitches. I even do bindings for the public. It is all part of the process of quiltmaking.

Susie (aka "Frustrated Binder")

Definitely. I really hate all hand work. I realize that it must be done, but IT is my least favorite thing about quilting. I will often make more than one top before I do a binding on a quilt, because I dislike it so.

misoop 07-17-2011 03:12 PM

I think I love to do bindings, because I, too, love to do handwork. It's also such a good feeling...when that's done, IT'S DONE!!! Yeah!!

Mundy 07-17-2011 03:49 PM

belive me not the best but some one has to do this job

HisPatchwork 07-17-2011 07:08 PM

I like the hand work, as well as the finished look of it. I just volunteered to do the binding on the quilt of valor our group is doing. It is something I can take with me, or sit and watch a dvd while sewing it.
