It's official I have no self-control!
A wonderful person posted here on the QB about a wholesale fabric place that will be selling the Minion fabric that is set to come out on June 15th. It's more than adorable. There were 2 different panels and 12 other fabrics that have minions. And the worse part was I do not have a wholesale license (which is probably a good thing now) so I searched the web to see who is going to sell this adorable fabric. And I found the Cozy Quilt shop here in El Cajon has it on advance sale.
The only self control I had was I ordered only one panel and 1 yard of each of 9 different fabrics. I do not have a pattern in mind, I do not have anyone but me to make something out of the fabric - but it is so very cute! It is a LQS so I am paying top dollar for it - but I just could not resist. Last weekend I went to another quilt shop (Memory Lane Quilt Shop) in El cajon and they had Dumbo fabric. I had never seen Dumbo fabric before and so I was going to buy a yard for future use - as we talked and I told her I wanted to make something for my DD who has loved Dumbo since she was 18 months old (she is now 30). She suggested I make a pillow case - so instead of 1 yard I bought 2. (See I have no self control.) |
Sometimes we just have to have a collection or particular print when we see it. :)
I am certainty guilty of this. And my hubby... Oh my! Went into a quilt shop one time with him for a cone of thread - he saw the newly released wizard of oz fabric collection - while I'm choosing my thread he was stacking bolts on the cutting table! That little $15 stop wound up costing over $200!!! And, its been 4-5 years, the fabrics are still in the bag, on the shelves- I've never figured out/found time to do anything with them. Sometimes he is much worse than I am at self control. |
Perhaps we're all infected with the same urge that made me buy a magazine last week purely because it has 250 paper hexies as a free gift - dispite already having a fiskars hexie stamp cutter, and probably well over 1000 card hexies already cut and waiting! I needed those paper hexies like a fish needs a bicycle lol.....

I understand having no self control. I try to control my spending on fabrics using my credit card and put a max on how much each month but as most of us know it doesn't always work out that way. I buy fabric cause I like it and have no plans for it at the time I purchase it. My friend who makes lots of quilts buys as she needs it, I buy because I just want it so I have a large stash. I've run out of room for fabrics so that's stopped me for a short period of time plus I went over my budget for the month on the credit card so have tried to curb myself for a month or two. So far so good for this month but still have another month to go with curbing and don't know how long I can hold out.

I call it the quilter's disease. My late DH used to say he wasn't sure which I lived most...quilting or collecting fabric! I honestly have no idea. I love both! Beats drugs for sure!

self control - I try - Honest!
But DH got contacted by a lady in the nearby town about vintage sewing machines. Turns out she's retiring and downsizing, and had managed to collect a few machines over the years. However after looking at the machines, she asked if I wanted to look at the fabric she had for sale downstairs. She's also a quilter and needed to clean out her stash . . . DH bought one machine, I bought over 30 yards of fabric. I keep telling myself - No more buying for stash! But it goes out the window as soon as I either see a great sale, or something I fall in love with. |
My wallet controls my self!

The only way I can have any self control is to not look.... no perusing online ... no just stopping in the LQS. I get fabric drunk just by the sight... and loose all inhibitions on purchasing fabric.
|
The worst for me is Missouri Quilt. Every morning in my in box is this super sweet, neat, tantalizing deal of the day which .......if you look in one of my drawers is just chock full of jelly rolls, charm packs, etc. It's ok. You don't have to have a project for it, you just have it.

Just reading this thread makes me want to buy fabric! I LOVE it!
|
Self-control??????? What's that?? Or do I want to know? :D :D :D

Before retirement I could spend a whole pay check at fabric stores and not blink an eye. But now I am living on less than 1/2 of a weeks pay per month. So my advice is -Build a beautiful stash of fabrics. Use your coupons for batting and rotary blades to include in your after retirement stash. And do not ever feel bad or guilty about your lack of control while shopping for fabric. Consider each purchase as an investment in your future's mental health well being. Quilting and sewing has helped to keep me get through all the extra hours I now have to fill and keep me sane. Happy Shopping.......

I know the feeling well. We have a LSQ that will be closing at the end of the month. Spent in the triple digits two days in a row. Will have to do another purge of my stash.
|
That is my problem also, if I see it and love it I have to buy it even if I have no idea of what I am going to do with it.
|
People I feel sorry for you---I have tons of self control! I can control my urge to go into the laundry room and start the next batch, I can control the urge to empty/fill the dishwasher, I can even control the urge to do Many household chores, and I can easily control my need to leave my sewing room and hop on the treadmill for more steps... I am a shining example of self control...

I'm afraid I don't have a lot of self control either, however, I am temporarily in a no buy period because of shoulder surgery (had my right shoulder replaced) I cannot drive, and my DH doesn't drive, so I'm going no where. Yes, I could order online, but DH has had his credit cards hacked more times than I care to count, so not sure how to resolve that problem. However, once I can drive again, it's off to JoAnn's, even if I only buy thread (like that's all I'm going to buy LOL.)

It is good to know, I am not alone on this journey-ha ! Love reading all the remarks--made me laugh so much !

I have some yards of great fabric that I love, but I wasn't sure what to do with them. Not enough for anything but a scrappy quilt. I decided to make everyone in the family; grandkids, grown kids, even the boys and men, a funky pillowcase. I decided since it was home-made, why try to make it look store bought, so I put one yard, give or take, of color on one side, another color of fabric on the other side, and a third color and or print for the cuff. I just didn't like seeing all that nice fabric sitting there doing nothing. I have had lots of fun with it.

I would have bought a whole bolt
