It's Virtual Quilt Day!! Today - Sunday, January 20, 2013

Today is the day!! Today I am hosting a Virtual Quilt Day. There are no rules. Basically I started this because I was too lazy to lug my sewing machine to the local quilt store for an all day sew-in. So I decided to have a home sew in with all my friends through the internet!! Join in anytime you can today. All you have to do is come here when you start and tell us your goals, then through out the day check in and let us know how you are doing and leave encouragement for others! That's it!! If you can only join us for half a day, that's fine. If you are in a different time zone, that's fine. This is just a loose and fun thing!! I find it helps me to sew more if I am joined by so many other sewers as well!!

Okay so here are my goals for the day:

1. Put together 3 applique blocks
2. Finish top for geese in the forest quilt

Sounds easy, but we all know how these things go!! So now tell me your goals and then get to sewing!! Pictures are always welcome!!

Cheers!
Rachel

Hi quilters DOTTYMO.
Today my project is to hand applique this block.

The block is19 from best of friends reverse applique. I'm running off schedule so hope a whole block today will help me catch up. This is hopefully to be finished by Easter.

This is my first attempt at a quilt, so today I'm going to put it together and do in-the-ditch machine quilting.

Here is the quilt top; I'll post my progress later today since I won't be able to start this until after Noon ET. I'm looking forward to seeing what others have in the works.

My goal for today is to pillowcase the layers I pinned together yesterday afternoon and, hopefully, do some of the cross hatching. This morning is for going to Mass and then "finding lunch." When DH watches football I'll be stitching. Happy VQD!

Furball 01-20-2013 03:31 AM

My goal for today is to FMQ a Linus quilt and put on the binding. Doesn't sound like much but I'm a novice and move very slowly or my stitches get inconsistent.
Now I need to make myself get off the ipad and out of my cozy warm chair . . .

grannie cheechee 01-20-2013 04:08 AM

My goal is to cut (using rotary cutter) the strips for a log cabin heart. It has over 1200 pieces. 1 1/4" and 2" wide, by 2' to 11 1/2" long.If I can get my tech friend to help me I'd take a picture. This will be the 19th one I've cut out, and the 16th top I've done. So, I should be able to do it blindfolded, but I've already sliced my finger with my eyes open, and don't want that to happen again. LOL Hope everybody has fun on VQD.

grann of 6 01-20-2013 04:09 AM

Good morning VQers. My goal today is to just get something accomplished. I have some embroidered blocks for the wallhanging swap that I need to do something with. Then I have 7 or 8 quilttops that Dotcomdtcm sent me to be quilted. Four are for breast cancer patients, so I need to quilt the blocks around a center embroidered design. They are so cute, I don't want to mess them up. Then I have a double-slice layer cake to finish sewing together. I also have a quilt I am making for myself that is a lattice type block made with all batiks; am just getting started on that. I will try to post pics in a bit....to dark here to take pics yet. Happy quilting everyone! This will be so much fun!

Good morning everyone, Working on my second cup of coffee and:

Apple Blossom Star: I chose this position for the star so I had to unsew my original plan with the solid red center. Now to resew it back together.

Make your day a good one.
peace

labeelady 01-20-2013 04:47 AM

Mind if I join you? Today I plan on making more flower star blocks for the queen-sized quilt I'm making for our bed. I have only one quilt we use on the bed, and it's not big enough! So I'm making one that's bigger. I have one row of the quilt already assembled. I was going to make 7 rows of 7 blocks each, but I think 5 blocks across will be plenty as I'm putting a sashing between the blocks and will add a border, not sure about that yet. I'm making each star with different fabrics, 2 colors in the star, and a white tonal for the background. Lots of HST's!

First on the agenda, though, is a pot of coffee and breakfast.

Good morning all! My goal is to finish Months 6, 7, and 8 from a 2011 BOM. Will check back in after lunch. I'm off to church in a little while and then will start actually working this afternoon.

hsweany 01-20-2013 05:12 AM

Looks like everyone has great projects in mind.
I want to finish my DS Stormtrooper quilt. I saw one made of crochet granny squares on Pinterest and decided to make it from fabric. I'm quilting it with invisible thread which is giving me fits!
Figure out how to post pictures from my IPad.
Have a great day quilting pals!

Count me in! I'm going to cut out the pieces for my KS quilt for my QS bed. I want it to be a bedspread to the floor. I measured and it should be perfect. The pattern is called Walkabout by Connecting Threads. I'm probably only going to get it cut out today and then maybe I'll make a bag or something small. I can't really start sewing on that giant quilt for 2 weeks as I'm having company and they sleep in my sewing/guest room. :-/ That's ok though- we are really looking forward to their visit so I'm happy to put my project on hold.

If my pictures attached like I think they did, the purple one is the pattern and the yellow, green, and brown/burnt red/yellow/green will be my quilt. My BR is buttercream yellow with brown, burnt red and green accents, with green curtains. I can't wait to see it in my room! I'll be sending this to a LA'er for sure.

Happy VQD to all!!

nycquilter 01-20-2013 05:22 AM

OK, this reminds me to get up off my A$$ and go upstairs and finish quilting a 99x88 quilt to go to victims of Hurricane Sandy. Why do I need this reminder??? Ah well, be back later. til then, I'll be quilting then binding this piece.
Good morning VQers. My goal today is to just get something accomplished.

I totally agree! My goal today is to sew something - anything - just get to the sewing machine! Good luck everyone!

SouthPStitches 01-20-2013 05:40 AM

Good morning all. My plans are to keep piecing on the star blocks of a pattern called Lake Oswego Stars. They are pieced old school style and have been very bratty going together. Forty blocks need to be made and I'm only on #18, but who's counting (me!). I'm also hand quilting a beautiful kaleidoscope table runner JenniePenny sent to me for Christmas. The way the weather is supposed to be in the northeast, think I'll stay in my sewing room the rest of the week too.

memepat 01-20-2013 05:48 AM

sandyl 01-20-2013 06:11 AM

I may join y'all. I have never (can you believe it?) made a Log Cabin block before. I am seriously considering doing the Craftsy free BOM which happens to be the Log Cabin for January. I really should be working on the hand quilting on a quilt for DGD graduation, but I need to spend time with the Bernina today. Having some serious withdrawals.

cannyquilter 01-20-2013 06:11 AM

Hi my goal for today is to finish quilting and put on binding for my mini mystery train ride quilt. Managed to get the quilt sandwiched yesterday and quilted but when I checked there were a lot of pleats on the back so have unpicked the worst and hopefully will re quilt the rest today. Fingers crossed, I am not very good at sandwiching.

I sewed all day yesterday, in anticipation of today. I finished the last block for my Dancing with the Stars BOM, so today I hope to get the blocks put together into a top. Borders are next month. But yesterday I worked on my "ugly fabric" challenge for my guild. 7 ugly fabrics (in the eyes of the original owners, anyway) to make into a crib size or smaller quilt. The whole thing is on my design wall, taking up every inch of space - so I've been working at it even thought it's not due until June. No pattern - just cutting background half-hexagons & diamonds to fit the spaces. I don't expect to finish today, but hopefully lots more progress.

Dottymo, that reverse applique sampler is going to be stunning! I hope you'll post pics when you're done.

JenelTX 01-20-2013 06:16 AM

My goal today is to finish the background for a triptych applique wall hanging.

Pat625 01-20-2013 06:17 AM

I have a qqueen size quilt I am hand quilting..Hoping to get a large amount of that done today...I have 12 out of 64 bloccks quilted...When I need a break, I will be going through my stash looking for some cute fabric for the mug rug swap..My partner has little info about her likes, so I guess I have to use my imagination!!

germanquilter 01-20-2013 06:22 AM

I did not think I could join in today since I have a midday get-together at a local restaurant (have to leave at noon, won't be back until around 5pm!). However, after reading that some of you just have as a goal to get to the sewing machine and sew something/ anything today, I am in! My goal will be to get into my sewing room and work on some Valentine mug rugs I started yesterday and to start cutting strips for a spring table runner. Keeping the goals light and hoping I get more done than expected:)

Rebecca_S 01-20-2013 06:27 AM

My goal today is to get some rows sewn together for my OBW. Sewing long rows together is much less fun to me than making the individual blocks. After that I am either going to cut and piece more triangles or will press a bunch of the HST I have been using for leaders and enders. I will probably press, that is easier to do while watching football.

irishrose 01-20-2013 06:29 AM

My goal for today is to get as far as I can finishing my mystery train quilt, but first I will brave the ice and snow to go to church. I'll check in later.

QultingaddictUK 01-20-2013 06:31 AM

Yesterday I achieved quite a lot of the top for Sasha's quilt, LovequiltsUK, just have 3 sides of the border to complete then I aim to layer and quilt it today, but as I have overslept it is going to be a tall order. So I must turn of my computer and get at it, will post pics of my progress later on :)

MissSongbird 01-20-2013 06:36 AM

I won't have any time today to work on a project in depth (homework, ballroom, sister's choir concert, etc.). But I do have one goal for today that needs to be done. I need to iron a bunch of fabric. That's probably the only thing I'll be able to get done. I wish I had more time :(

quiltingnd 01-20-2013 06:36 AM

Good morning. My work in progress is using 2 1/4" scrap squares and making stars for a scrappy quilt. Hoping to get 3-4 more blocks made today.

quiltingeileen 01-20-2013 06:38 AM

My goal for this morning is to finish a quilted pillow so I can bring it to my quilting group's show and tell party this afternoon.

humbird 01-20-2013 06:38 AM

I layed out my diamonds yesterday and determined that I need at least 5 more diamond blocks. Hoping do do at least one today. They are EPP 1 inch hexagons in the diamond shape rather than GFG, (which I have done 2 of) and are a bit slow going. If I can do one a day, I call it a good day. Then I need to do several half diamonds.

It sounds like you all are so very busy doing wonderful things, and if I can keep from checking back here to see what you are all doing, I may be able to get my goal done!
