of some of you ladies talking about using the printer and printing pictures on fabric. For some reason, my brain cannot seem to type in the correct thing to find it online.
Can someone enlighten me on this and explain how to do it? Where do you get what ever it is that you need? Does the ink wash off and is it hard to quilt on? Now, mind you...I only have Ben Franklins here and they don't carry much in the way of quilting items and such. I'd need to order whatever I need online or see if I could find it when we go to Hawaii next month. Would/does Walmart sell it or would I have to go to a quilt shop? |
Terri, there are several ways to do it but if you want the ink to not wash out you will need to get Bubble Jet Set I can't find it in stores but it is on line, You treat the fabric with that. I cut my fabric the size of printer paper and iron on a piece of freezer paper then it will go through the printer. If you don't treat it it will wash off. I just use a tightly woven white for the fabric. I have no problem quilting it. You can also purchase transer fabric but I haven't found one I like.
|
Thanks! I'll have to wait until I get to Hawaii and see if I can find the stuff. I'm pretty sure I cannot have it shipped here, but I can always ask a company.
But, one would think that maybe a quilt store might sell it? |
I think you can also buy it at a Joanns or perhaps even and Office Max or something similar
|
Well? There's no Joanns or Office Max here. There's an Office Max in Hawaii right down the street from my daughters house. Maybe when I talk to her tomorow,,,if I remember, I'll ask her to go and look. She can actually walk to it.
Back to the tightly woven fabric thing.....fabric such as....?????? |
Hi Terri, (as they are all of line at the moment I will jump in) Cotton Poplin will do the trick . You can also buy "Photo Fabric Ink Sheets" in packs of 6 already to go through the printer, saves messing with Bubble jet. In English money Pounds 10.95. Or if you are going to do a lot of it you can buy the fabric in rolls 120" x 8 1/2" wide for Pounds 19.95. You can also print on Silk, Cotton Canvas, Cotton Twill.
Hope that helps.Elle x |
By the way the higher the thread count, like something with 240 thread count (get them to count the threads in the shop LOL) the better image you will get.

I usuall use something like a 200 count sheet I get the twin size from Walmart for less than 3.00 and I find they work great.

I use "Printed Treasures" ink jet fabric sheets. I have had really good results with it. I have heard that the June Taylor brand is not good at all, that the picture does wash off it.
You can get the Printed treasures at most online shops. I know Hobby Lobby carries it, doubt you will have access to that store though. |
I like the "Printed Treasures" brand also. I've found it at WalMart at a pretty reasonable price. However, I usually save my 40% coupon and buy a big box at JoAnn's. It's really fun to use. Just put the fabric with the paper backing into your ink jet printer and print out whatever you want. Then follow package directions on how to "set" the ink. Some of it has to be rinsed and some of it ironed. I usually use this method to make my quilt labels.
|
I use Printed Treasures sew-on and am VERY happy with it. JoAnn's carries it online and I think you can use their coupons online as well, no? It's very easy. http://www.printedtreasures.com/prod...ges/SewOn.aspx

whenever i've needed a resupply of bubblejetset, i've found the best prices at dharma trading company. unfortunately, they don't seem to sell the special formula for hewlett-packard printers.
compuquilt.com sells both regular and the hp formula bubble jetset for slightly more than dharma. it's waaaaaaaaay easy to use and a fraction of the cost of the packaged sheets. |

I did this one for an anniversary gift.

I use Printed Treasures and find it's the easiest and gives the best quality- I've tried other methods but come back to the Printed Treasures.
|
I used PT also--for the barn quilt. They say if you're making a wall hanging you don't have to remove the paper from the back--keeps them stiffer.
It's easy Terri--the sheets fit into your printer. I had to print a sample first to make sure it was the right size for the barn doors. I put the photos in a word document first--then you can get more per page--depending on how big you want them. Angie gave me that idea. |

Terri, I used the Printed Treasures to make a memory quilt for my Grandmother. I don't do this type of project enough to warrant fooling with the bottle of stuff to treat the fabric, so the Printed Treasures sheets worked better for me. They were easy to come by..ordered online, pretty reasonable cost-wise , and really easy to use. Just lined up the pics I wanted in a work doc., printed as normal..used the fabric instead of paper.
I did not like quilting over the pics though. If you are going around them, like a quilt in the ditch thing- great. My design had some lines that went through the pics and they were very stiff and hard for the needle to get through, but it can be done and my quilt turned out fine Phrases of my GM's favorite things like...ice cream on a hot day..corn on the cob dripping butter, fall walks...etc. My grandmothers lap quilt..family pics and the light ones are just words typed out of her favorite things |
Terri I used the Electric Quilt fabric Sheets to make our family memory quilt. They were easy to use through a printer . As for washable we haven't washed the quilt yet, but I did run them under water after they had dried and did not run. Joanns has them and you can use coupons on them !

Thanks all......
I'll have to check it all out. This is for a project I will be starting in Jan |
We had a speaker at guild in July, Betty Nicassio - she does a lot of photos on fabric. I took a class from her years ago, back when we used the photo copier for the transfer! Anyway, she's moved up to computer printed fabric photos now & I believe she sells from her website. She has some amazing quilts using the same stuff she sells & had samples that had been washed many times with barely any fading at all. Here's her site: http://www.bettys-photos-on-fabric.com/

jhittlesewing.com has the printed treasures for a good price. We've used that on several memory quilts and works well.
|
Thanks for the tips.
|
Terri, I have used Printed Treasures for my memory items and it works very well. Just follow the directions on the folder. I also use my 40% coupon from Joanne's.
