I've joined the club

I never thought I'd become one those people but I did. I put a machine needle through my finger. How in the world I managed to miss the nail I can only say was a blessing.

Treasureit 05-14-2014 05:50 PM

OUCH! That is a big Ouchie! Can't say I have joined that club yet...and would prefer to be on the outside!

LivelyLady 05-14-2014 05:54 PM

I feel your pain. I joined the club a year ago when I sliced off a chunk of my finger when rotary cutting. It was definitely a wake up call for me.

quiltingcandy 05-14-2014 05:54 PM

Been there and done that. Okay, pity party is over - Kiss it, make it better and keep on sewing.

Take care - hope it doesn't hurt for long. :=)

JustAbitCrazy 05-14-2014 07:07 PM

Ouch! So sorry you joined. I've done both: needle through the finger and sliced a bit of finger off with the rotary cutter. Now I use a Slidelock ruler. Learning the hard way here....

Jeanette Frantz 05-14-2014 07:13 PM

Yeah, me, too! Mine really still looks nasty and it's been a week. I guess I should have gone to the ER and had it stitched. I just hate to sit there in the waiting room -- It seems that people behave the absolute worst in that waiting room! The rotary cutter I've got -- I just bought it new, so it's doggone sharp! I haven't been doing any sewing for the past week and the typing (at work) is sort of like "hunt and peck". I really cut mine deep, though. It is healing -- just not as fast as I would like! Yeah, learning the hard way is right!

Hope your finger heals quickly!

Jenette

ditto !!! Ouch !!

judi wess 05-15-2014 05:00 AM

Ouch, I too joined the club this spring. Have been sewing for 55 years and this was one of those moments.

Sewnoma 05-15-2014 05:07 AM

Oh ouch! Sorry you had to join the club!

I got my membership when I was about 8 and put a needle through my finger. I betcha I screeched a lot louder than you did! Oh the drama... LOL

It sure does make you cautious though! It's been 31 years since then and so far I haven't repeated that particular mistake. *knock on wood* I've skimmed a few layers of skin off with a rotary and caught a fingernail a time or two but so far nothing deep enough to bleed...that mistake is still waiting for me apparently!

Crqltr 05-15-2014 05:24 AM

Been there...done that!! I also missed the nail..still hurt like heck! And of course the first thing you do is try to pull back. Took a few seconds to turn the crank and get my finger out! Thank goodness the needle didn't break off!

cjsews 05-15-2014 06:21 AM

I have had the pleasure myself. Try unscrewing the needle from the left with your right hand. Awkward. My DH said this will hurt coming out. I just could not see working with the darn thing in my finger.

omacookie 05-15-2014 06:30 AM

Rented a machine to make Poddle skirt when In college. Put a band aide on finger and went on date ! Oh Did I tell you tha t I was a Home Ec major ???

pyffer3 05-15-2014 08:43 AM

how do you sew your finger? that is one club I do NOT want to join! feel better soon.

Prissnboot 05-15-2014 09:18 AM

You can now say quilting is in your blood.....

Buckeye Rose 05-15-2014 09:22 AM

I sewed my finger as well, but the needle broke into 4 pieces with 3 of them in my finger....had to have them surgically removed.

Gladys 05-15-2014 02:45 PM

I got my membership at the age of 10 on a treadle machine of my grandmothers. It happened right after my mom said be careful. Went through nail and all. I did not feel any pain and just sat there wondering if I had the nerve to call my mom...my sweet great aunt was there and she knew immediately and came over and talked very calmly and said to sit real still and she got the needle out of my finger and then I went and told my mom. I still remember it as if it was yesterday. They poured hydrogen peroxide on it and tincture of iodine and Grandma had the wonderful slave that was called King Pain Salve. They slathered that on it and wrapped it up and then it really started throbbing. No pain though when it was pinned to the machine with the needle lol but after a lot of pain.

However, it was a good lesson because it hasn't happened again and I used to make my clothes so there was plenty of opportunity.

Jeanette Frantz 05-15-2014 03:41 PM

Let's hope not! I promise you, I'll be ever vigilant that it doesn't happen again! To tell you the truth, it made me really fee pretty stupid! I'm not really stupid, but we all do stupid things! That's life!LOL

I sliced into the tip of my index finger with a garden shears when pruning some bushes when I was in junior high.

I've kept my distance from "dangerous" things since then. Never had a needle get me... knock on wood.

That said, I've somehow managed to get a really nasty "thump" from the needle bar and smashed an acrylic nail a few months ago. ;)

athomenow 05-15-2014 05:23 PM

Needle through the finger in high school home ec. Steel crochet hook through my thumb, emergency room visit to cut it off and pull it back through. Live and learn!

Tweety2911 05-15-2014 05:48 PM

Ouchie!! Hugs!

Kris P 05-16-2014 03:22 AM

Feeling woozy, good thing I'm sitting down!

rakerlm 05-16-2014 05:03 AM

I just did the same thing on Wednesday! It was on my 6 needle emb machine - good thing it was only 1 needle!

tessagin 05-16-2014 05:06 AM

This one I've joined.

MargeD 05-16-2014 09:15 AM

Ouch, I feel your pain, as I have sewn both a finger and my thumb, at different times thankfully, but it hurt. Hope you're feeling better.

crafty pat 05-16-2014 09:15 AM

I did that with the needle several years back. It went in right beside the bone just missing it but hit a nerve and now my finger has a numb feeling inside my finger where the needle went in. Feels creepy but I live with it.

BrendaK 05-16-2014 09:25 AM

I also have been there. Only thing was I didn't do it to myself. When I was very young my sister did it to me. After all don't you do what your big sister tells you to do. She said, "I just wanted to see what would happen". Hope it's better soon. BrendaK

caspharm 05-16-2014 09:43 AM

Definitely not a club to join for fun. :o I've done the needle with 3 different machines (FW, Designer1, and Innova LA). In all 3 cases, I did miss the bone. I have also done the rotary cutter - requiring stitches in my thumb.

Jinney 05-16-2014 09:45 AM

I was 8 the first time I did that, with a treadle machine no less. My mom was trying to teach me how to sew, she gave up and said I was just going to have to buy my clothes. lol

SueSew 05-16-2014 10:50 AM

Oh, shudder. I'm so sorry you and the other posters have been injured. I am an accident-prone, sort of clumsy person who is not good with small-motor activity and I am sure both those accidents are waiting for me. My husband worries whenever I use the rotary cutter...but my own biggest worry is that I will use the cursed foot pedal and put my foot on it too soon while I still have fingers under the needle. I much prefer the start-stop button for safety reasons.

You are all so brave!

Wish you a quick recovery!

CAS49OR 05-16-2014 11:54 AM

Ouch, sorry it happened to you!

I sewed my finger twice in one week! Luckily, my acrylic nail saved me, it would have easily gone through my own thin nails. Now I'm scared and doubly cautious.

Yesterday I sliced a piece of my thumb off trying to put the food processor blade away. I didn't go to the ER because what can they do? There's nothing to sew on and nothing to stitch together. It just shaved a piece off the surface. What an inconvenient place, on my "working hand".

For those of you with this type of accident, do you remember how long it takes to heal? Mine is still bleeding.

Twisted Quilter 05-16-2014 02:47 PM

Ooh, ooh, ouch! I keep getting invitations to join this club but I've declined each time.

Ohh, please be careful! I don't like to go to the ER either but if it's still bleeding after too long please do go, or call your doctor and see if you can stop in. If there's nothing else to be done they can at least put stuff on the wound to make it stop bleeding and help sort of seal it up so you're less likely to get an infection.

My thumb is throbbing today too, I gave myself a steam burn at lunch time. Sigh. Hands are so useful, but also so fragile!!

Jannie 05-16-2014 06:13 PM

I hope I never join your club. Sorry to hear you joined.

OldHairTwister 05-16-2014 07:49 PM

I too belong to that club.....ten or so years ago, I put the needle thru my left index finger. Thankfully it went in right next to my nail and didn't hit the bone. It was not fun turning the wheel to back it out though. I was using a zipper foot and just got it too close....ouch. Had a regular Dr. app't the next and showed to the Dr. and he immediatley ordered a tetnus shot. Said anytime you get a puncture wound, you should be sure that you have had a tetnus shot within the last ten years. Hope you heal quickly.

Me too!!!!

cashs_mom 05-18-2014 03:14 PM

I've done it twice about 30 years apart. Both times it went right thru the nail. The first time I just pulled it out, the second time it broke off and I ended up at a sports doctor and she removed it. Some of us are less coordinated than others. LOL

CAS49OR 05-19-2014 07:56 AM

I really like the Band-Aid brand Activ-Flex bandages I tried for the first time. http://www.walgreens.com/store/c/ban...c-00005609ed29

I placed one around my thumb and another kind of at a slant around the tip and angled down. It is staying in place well. I cut a slit on the second one, on the thumb pad side to get it to conform to my finger.

It seems to have some silicone in it, and seems very durable as I've gotten it wet a few times. I was having issues with everything else slipping off my finger.

I've been able to knit with it, and if my cold is truly gone I may be able to sew today!

This might work for you to replace what the Dr. put on your finger, or if (like me) you didn't go to the Dr.

I'm talking about my thumb incident. Luckily, when I sewed my finger the acrylic nail broke but saved the needle from going all the way through! My fake nails were very thick before I started doing my own!

Hope you're feeling better by now!
