I keep hearing about folding material with the ruler. What exactly is that and how is it done?

What is the ruler folding method?

They stood up without the boards!!! I was so thrilled. I now have most of my fabric standing vertically (much easier to take a piece out that way) and am not having to buy boards! All the pieces I did this with are 1 yard or more.

Thanks for the idea. I have mine ruler folded and stacked. I'm going to try standing mine vertically. It would be much easier to get to the fabric I want. I always want what is on the bottom of the stack. lol

Go to Missouri Start Quilt Company and they have an I Spy Jar Quilt that I am making. Oh so cute and so much fun. They have a tutorial on it.

All my fabric is stored in plastic tubs. They sit under my bed and several stack in the guest room closet. It was driving me nuts having to dig through my fabrics. So after reading the posts regarding folding fabric using your 6 by24 inch ruler I thought I'd try it. Let me tell you I couldn't be happier. All my fabric is nicely folded in my tubs end to end. They look like books on a bookshelf. Easy to see, organized by colours. Even my fat quaters have been refolded. It takes up less room and looks so tidy. Once I refolded the first tub of fabric I couldn't stop. I did them all. Some of my pieces are 6 meters long and they still folded well. I feel so organized. Thank you quilters for sharing all your great ideas. I refolded 8 tubs!

I've used a 5x24 ruler (I think--I know it is 5" wide) and I love it. I put them in my bins organized and they look so neat. I agree with the lady that said she was folding an hour and half later. It is really a great, simple idea.

I know this sounds crazy, but I use my bed with the bedspread folded down and use the fleece blanket on which I lay the fabric. It acts as traction and helps to keep the fabric neatly on the ruler. I just give the ruler with the fabric a tug as I roll.
