Janome 4119, White 2221, or something newer?

My niece has recently shown interest in quilting and unfortunately, there is not a sewing machine in the family.

I want to get one and learn alongside her (she is quite young) but I don't want to commit to anything too pricey until I see how long she sticks with it.

After some research, I found that White and Janome are respected brands, and there is a White 2221 and a Janome 4119 going for about $50, used, in my neighborhood. There are also some newer machines with mixed reviews, or I could get a cheap beginner machine, new. However, I think the used White and Janome might be of higher quality, even though they are older?

Does anyone know about these machines and how they compare to each other? Is getting an old machine a bad idea for two beginners?

Thank you!

Are you sure about the Janome number being 4119? I can find reviews for the 4120, but don't see anything for a 4119. I have 2 Janomes...and love them. I have the 3160 QDC for traveling and classes, and the Horizon 7700. I bought a Janome Jem for my daughter.

Here's a thread on a 4119 somebody else found. She said it's a great machine
