I have a very cheap Kenmore that I use just for piecing or when I need a different colored thread. But noisy, you can't hear yourself think. I put some leftover batting under it and it works a lot better and no cost. I am like you, shipping puts a knot in my panties. Hope this helps you, also the rubber mat works to, so if you put both?????

I feel must warn you all about that woven look nonslip stuff. I have found if it is in constant contact with plastic it will transfer its pattern to it permanantly, I had a small piece under my plastic pins holder lid with the main part sitting in the lid and it transfered the pattern to the nice clear lid, ruined it as far as I'm concerned. I certainly wouldn't want that formed in the body of my sewing machine.

Just as an update, as of 1/10/11, Amazon (Ken's Sewing and Vacuum) had them for $12 now!
At the moment, I use a quilters pressing board under my serger (large rectangle board covered in cotton duck sells in Joanne's for $24 which you can get for $12 or $10 depending on your coupons). I needed something asap.. and already had the board. My serger sits on top of my 1923 Singer walnut cabinet... so I don't want any scratches or bleeding to happen to it! I may make a padded batting filled pad out of some leftover homedec materials instead.. |
I use and old cutting mat under my machine. It keeps the machine from sliding around and the edge sticks out from the front so I have a handy measuring guide.

I have a closed cell foam kitchen rug I found at Walmart, under my embroidery machine. If I step out of the room I can't hear the machine running. It is 3/8 of an inch thick and can be cut to size if needed. I paid around 10.00 for it. They still sell them in the throw rug section.
