Janome stitch length question
 

I just purchased a Janome 6500 and it has all the bells and whistles that I wanted...love it. But I have been using my walking foot on a cross-hatch pattern and my stitches look a little too small. I'm using stitch length 3.5 and wondering what length you use. Need to know for my next quilt, which is a UFO and will also be a cross hatch. Thank you in advance.

I have a few Janomes and quilt straight line quilting at 2.8. You might measure your stitches to see if they are truly 3.5.

Yes, measure the seams, the machine might need a little calibrating at the shop. I quilt at a 3.

I have a Bernina and I quilt at 3 normally.

The problem could be your walking foot. Is it a generic, or specific to your machine? Old or new? A walking foot can wear out, be defective right out of the box, or not be a good match for your specific machine. Sometimes a generic walking foot will work fine on a machine, but most of the new machines work better when you use a brand name walking foot made specifically for the model (or series) of machine that you have.

Edit: Also, how thick is your batting? The thicker the batting, the longer the stitch should be to compensate. Experiment with some leftover sandwich pieces to see if simply lengthening the stitch will solve the problem.

I quilt at about 3.0 on my 6600.

My Janome 6500 came with a specific walking foot made for the machine. I'm quilting the first quilt on the machine now, but did a few test sizes for stitch length before starting. 3.4 was what I came up with that looked ok.....a 3.0 would be tiny to me.
I'll play around some more today because I want to make a large sandwich and try out all the stitches the machine has to offer. Thank you for your help.
