Before I joined this board, I was perfectly satisfied to call what I made a quilt. My mother and grandmother both made beautiful quilts which were tied. When I started quilting I tied at first then moved to stippling. Now I see real quilting and I am so jealous! I plan to try my hand at feathers next. The quilting done on some of the photos is amazing! Thanks for the inspiration. Any pointers for a regular sewing machine?

I see nothing wrong with tying a quilt. I have tied many of them.

I think quilting is wonderful however you do it! I see wonderful machine quilting that makes me drool, hand quilting which is SO pretty, and yep, I even love the tied look!

For me quilting is a technique of it's own. You can combine it with piecing or appliqué in many different ways, it can highlight the design of your quilt top and enhance it - but quilting can be used alone as well in wholecloth quilting. Piecing and appliqué uses color to create contrast, quilting produces structure and variegates with light and shadow - the color of thread complements both.
You can be very creative with your quilting - it is much more than just fix the layers of a quilt together.

start small and practice- if you don't try to handle something too big at first you will have better control, and as you get rhythm you will get better and better- and work yourself up to larger and larger projects- before you know it you will be (man-handling) large quilts through your little machine :)

Some of us gentlemen on here do a pretty fair job of piecing and quilting too. My I say if you want to learn feathers you practice drawing them out on newpsrint or some other type on non exspensive paper. that way you can build up muscle memory, and hand eye training. best thing to do is to draw a straing line and practice one side at a time. Draw half a heart and use the straight line as the stem once you gett good on each side of the stem, draw them together and learn to back tract on top of every other one. then Stitch till you are very comfortable. Remember fingers hot dogs and potato chips dont look good as feathers. heart shapes.

LOL, you are so funny! I think all I can quilt is hot dogs and potato chip shapes,LOL!
