Jelly Roll 1600 Quilt
 

Has anyone made a jelly roll 1600 quilt one by cutting all the strips (in the jelly roll) in half before starting? --so that each strip is a shorter lenghth? This morning I just started reading someone's comment on a web site (for a 1600 quilt) but then had to leave quickly and didn't get to finish reading it--and now I can't find the site back. I think I read that she cut them in half and then cut off 8" from the first strip. Has anyone tried this? I wish I could find the website back so I could read it thoroughly. I would appreciate any comments anyone has on this.

I just took a class on the jelly roll race quilt. We sewed the strips together diagonally (instead of a straight seam across) then cut off about 6 to 8 inches before sewing the strips together. I made mine with blue batiks and it turned out real nice. You could cut the strips in half first, it would just take longer to sew together. It was a fun class to do.

I saw one where the maker cut each strip in half and then added a square between each strip. It made more of a pattern than just the strips. You can sew the strips together with either a straight seam or a diagonal seam. I just did a black and white one with straight seams between the strips. I also saw a black one done with squares of brights between the strips.

A number of my sewing buddies cut the strips in half and I liked the result much better than using the full strips. The straight seems look great to me.
