"Somewhere" (don't ask me where...that's why I'm asking...lol!) I saw a "formula" for making the jelly rolls into smaller size quilt tops. I need a top approximately 3 feet by 4 feet, and have started sewing my 2 1/2" scraps together, but I'm not sure how long to make the strip before I join it together to start the "block"?

just as a guess i would say 20-22 strips should give you close to that measurment.

You could cut the larger one down to the size you want..... or do the math as to how long your first joined together strip needs to be, to come out to what you want.

How about drawing it on graph paper then add your seam allowances.

One strip WOF is about 40" .... if you're cutting them 2-1/2" wide, then they'll finish at 2". So that's a tad wider than your 36" wide.

25 strips would take you to 50" in length.

So
25x40 = 1000 inches should be enough for your baby quilt.

Choose random lengths of your strips to avoid the seams coming in the same place and keep the random look.

I didn't allow for the seams when joining the strips ... and if you're joining them on the bias, that'll chop them down a bit further. I think the bias joins look much nicer than the blunt straight ones.

Because of this, I'd add on an extra two or three strips to the 1000" to make sure you have enough.

Better to be too large and cut it to size ........ than too small and be disappointed.
