I love the jelly roll quilts ya'll have done from this tutorial. http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-44258-1.htm I want to make one from batiks about 90x90 finished. I've tried doing the math several ways but am just confusing myself...math is NOT my strong suit! Would someone double check my math or help me figure out how many strips I need?

According to my questionable figures, if I use 60 strips I should end up with a length of 78 3/4 (60 x 42" = 2520" divided in half 5 times = 78.75"), but it will still only be about 64" wide.

I saw a picture of one somewhere on the board that had a cool coin border. The was a 2" inner border, the coins, then a 2" outer border. If I made the coins 4", that would give me an 8" border for a total of 16" added. That leaves me 10" short on the width.

My challenge, I think, is how to do this to add 10" to the width? That would be 10 " added to the length of each fold.

Did I totally confuse everyone?!?!

Thanks,
Dee

As I figure

start with 2520 take away 20 to stagger seams so we have 2500. then half is 1250, half 625 half 312.5 half 156 so half is 78 Ok so we agree that far.
We also agree would be 64 wide.

So how about using just enough to make it 64 wide so we just take 64 and double it the 5 times. we have 64 then 128 then 256 then 512 then 1024 then 2048 inches. So sew 49 strips together. and take off 10 inches in order to stagger seams. Then you could use the other 11 stripes to make one of your borders around the strips in the middle.

you will need 13 inches of border strips on all sides and voila your quilt will be 90 X 90.

Now someone please check my math to make sure I am right befor she starts. If she chooses to do it this way.

Are Batiks 42.25 inches wide? If not it would throw our numbers off a little but we have got to be close.

Oh I don't mean 42.25 but 42.5o

OK...I think I follow that. I didn't even think of figuring it backwards! And it would give me plenty to do the coin border, it wouldn't matter if they were repeated several times.

I don't have alot of Batiks yet but what I do have is measuring over 42" after pre-washing. So I think our figures will be OK. Plus I plan to buy extra....any excuse to add to the stash!

Aunt Retta.....thanks so much for your help!
