I am ready to start the jelly roll quilt where all the strips are sewn together then cut and sewn etc. Are they sewn straight across or on ther bias as binding is done?
I'm not sure which would look the best. Any suggestions :?:

The ones I have seen are sewed on an angle - does that help ?

I like bias. It looks like a fun quilt.

Both ways work. The slant takes longer, but is a very striking look.

The first strip you should cut in half and then sew all the strips together for the first time on a 45 degree angle. By sewing on a 45 degree angle your seams will give a staggered look. I personally like this look. Have fun. I've made two so far.

I like to use bias. It has some give in it.

I have made them both ways...

Both ways work. Depends on the look you want.

I have asked this another time but am asking again, I always wash my fabrics to remove the smell and be clean before cutting and sewing. Should the Jelly Roll strips be washed before sewing? Will it shrink if not washed?

I don't wash jelly rolls because it would just be a pain in the hiney for me, but there are people who do. Some people have to because of allergies, etc...

I would not risk prewashing precuts, like 2-1/2" strips. you will lose too much of them into strings and distortions

blueangel 10-02-2011 08:58 PM

Don't prewash. You would have a mess on your hands.

Straight or on a diagonal, I've seen both, but I've also seen it where there has been a 2 1/2in block sewn between each strip, (all the same colour) and I liked that too.

No, do not prewash. i know on some of the charm square packs, it says "do not prewash" . Good luck with your quilt, i love the look of that pattern, either way you choose to do it!

Been asking myself this same question. Have seen done both ways. Perhaps it might depend on the spirit of the fabrics' designs. Someone mentioned above seeing a small block placed between each strip - like that. Still easy, but steps it up a notch.
