I have not done anything with strips and one of my daughters said she is sending me a "jelly roll" ... is this something worthwhile? Just looking for opinions before I try to find some info on using strips for quilts ... any suggested reading?

Thanks everyone!! :D

I love the jelly roll strips that have 40(2 1/2" strips). I like the large variety of fabrics. If you google jelly roll quilt patterns you will find a lot.

Raggiemom 02-01-2011 10:56 AM

I find jelly rolls very useful! There are lots of patterns for them.

Sapphire_Rae 02-01-2011 11:05 AM

I like jelly rolls. Yep, lots of patterns.

debbieumphress 02-01-2011 11:08 AM

Jelly rolls, turnovers, candy bars, layer cakes, honey buns. Wonder why they named them desserts? Moda bake shop. One website calls jelly rolls, sushi rolls,.LOL.

Do a search right here on the board and you find a nice variety of quilts made with jelly rolls.

Missouri Star Quilt Co. has a few YouTube videos on how to use jellyrolls and other dessert named precut packages (honeybun, dessert roll, turnover). Here's a few for the jellyroll.

Search here on the board for the "fast jelly roll" It is what it says...fast.

Check out a book called "Jelly Roll Quilts" by Pam and Nicky Lintott(sp?). It has several nice patterns and they are fairly easy to use.

I love jelly rolls!! I especially like that they are coming out with solid color ones now. I did a quilt where I used a normal jelly roll and a Moda Wheat. Quick and easy and looks great.

Jelly roll quilts are really fun and fast to do. I learned using them from youtube videos by Missouri Star Quilt Co. They have a lot of tutorials on youtube and also on their website. I love the lady's teaching.

Good luck and enjoy

Talking of naming them desserts, did you know the older phones are called "candy bars"....

Seems the "dessert" idea crosses mediums....Hmmmmm

AnnieH 02-02-2011 08:25 AM

jeanneb52 02-02-2011 11:21 AM

Here is a picture of one I am doing with a honey bun (1 1/2in) strips. Same as jelly roll but smaller width strips. Need to add boarders.

Here is a quilt I made for a friend from a jelly roll--if I remember right, I cut a few strips from my stash, too. But it was all done with 2 1/2" strips.

I love this board - anything you want to know (subject), even if you didn't know you wanted to know about it. This is the first time I have gotten my feet wet over the subject of jelly rolls - and you are right, the ladies at Missouri make things look so easy - and "logical," like the jelly roll tubes to make the squares. They make it look so relaxing and fun!

They have some neat books that tell what you can do with them. :)

jitkaau 02-03-2011 05:57 AM

There are lots of patterns for jelly rolls - they save you having to cut strips and I would buy them if they were not so expensive. Moda Bake Shop has some patterns.

This is one of my favorite quilts to sew up quickly. You can easily make it in an afternoon.

Cyn 02-03-2011 08:56 AM

I'm smack dab in the middle of one of the super fast jelly roll quilts where you just keep sewing them together until it's done. Found the idea on here! It is fast if not a little boring but I like the way it's turning out. I just can't stay focused enough to finish in one sitting- but that's a persoanl problem. It would be easy to do!

Looking forward to seeing this when completed....
