I've done a good bunch of these and found it to be a fun way to make a quilt top.............I was NOT in any hurry, and took my time, and I find that pressing each row is a better way to put it all together.........and you do need to get up and move around every so often........I try to not sit longer than an hour, without getting up and moving around..go get a cup of tea or some water.........or whatever.............I have always just used my scrap pieces, so never went to the expense of buying special fabrics for it............using the different fabrics gives you a ton of different looks............I have done one in all solids, and then I did one all with kids prints, and then I did one that is all pink fabrics (that is the pretties one so far, i think).........I also did al blue prints and it was a nice one too..........the only thing with using your scraps is to be sure and not use more than one piece of each one.......so you dont have 2 just alike, lining up when you are sewing it together........I have also done 1 1/2 in, 2, 2 1/2 and 3 inch widths..........I like the 2 1/2 the best.............this is a fun "pattern" and its well worth your giving it a try, at least once..........I am thinking of doing the next one in flannels.............let me see if I can figure out how to get a picture on here of the pink one.............

I made this twin size donation quilt for a teen girl at The Baptist Childlrens Home. The fabrics were so soft. It really turned out pretty. I loved that the quilt came together quickly. I used raspberry polka dot on the back. I know she loved her Christmas gift as much as I loved making it for her.

I'd be open to using stash fabrics--------but to buy strips to sew together in the jelly roll style---------NO!

I cut my own strips too- it ended up being a less than $12 top. Since I can never find good sales on jelly rolls- that was certainly better than $40!

I just bought a Jelly Roll yesterday as a Daily Deal for $17! Can't wait to get it.

I had to try this so as I was killing time before a doctor's appointment yesterday (at a fabric store, OF COURSE) I picked up a Hoffman "Bali Pops" batik pack. I had a coupon so it was $22 - not too bad considering it's batiks. (It's a nice pack, only a couple of repeats, and the edges are knife-cut, not pinked) I picked the "cappuccino" color theme with my father-in-law in mind. It went together SO FAST! I didn't pay attention but I think it was only maybe 2-3 hours. I just did straight seams instead of angling the joints - next one I'll do angled and see if I like that better. I didn't press anything either.

It turned out pretty good but it's a little boring. I'm thinking of either doing the "postage stamp" idea that Peckish posted about, or I was thinking of cutting them into blocks and rotating the blocks around a bit, maybe with some sashing. I haven't done a quilt with sashing before so might be a good time to experiment!

I don't mind the look if they have a border or 2 around them and especially a small block between strips.
It's not the sewing but the final product that interests me but they should be fast either way.

I took frequent breaks while making mine. I wasn't actually racing anyone (tho I'd like to know how quick I could make one) so it didn't matter. I agree... sometimes it can get boring (like chain piecing). I like to get up often, too.

Do we get to see pix of your JRR? I hope so!
