A friend gave me 2 Jelly rolls for a gift,

What can you make with then? Can 2 jelly rolls make a quilt for a queen bed quilt, is there enought fabric or should add more ? Thanks :-)

calla 07-30-2011 08:04 AM

I used one JR and it measured 30 x 60 I don't remember how many times I sewed.......I should of kept track. However, when folded in half, it will make 2 baby quilts with boarders added............calla

There are several Jelly Roll patterns at Missouri Star. The tutorials are great. I made the Summer in the Park, it turned out great and was easy.

a jelly roll is normally 40 - 2 1/2" strips of fabric- so- sewn together- just as strips you would have 40"x80" if you sewed them both together the same way then sewed those together- you could have (about) 78"x 80" (figuring some trimming & seam allowance)
if you then added borders you could make it a queen-
if you do something with the strips besides just straight sewing them- it will make it less- since you loose 1/2" with every seam
there are TONS of patterns for jelly roll quilts- strip quilts

Look for a pattern called Two by Fours - with some extra fabric for borders this makes a nice twin size quilt out of one jelly roll.

What about a log cabin on steroids? Those are super simple and a jelly roll would work I think.

yolanda 07-30-2011 02:06 PM

Yikes I sent the picture 3 times... my computer froze and I just got it back working.

Thanks for your kind comments! The pattern is 'Barbed Wire' from a book 'Twosey-Foursey Quilts' by Cathy Wierzbicki. In the book it is done in homespun fabrics autumn colours and looks totally different!! It looks complicated but went together very easily!

A closer pic. Shows block construction.

If you take one jellyroll and do the pattern that calls for sewing all the strips together into one long string, then sewing the strings together, over and over until you get a large piece, you can get a quilt top that is 3200 square inches. So, two jelly rolls will get you an area of about 80" x 80" using that pattern.

I REALLY love this....thanks for sharing!

Yolanda that is a beautiful quilt. I bought three JR's and used one for a quilt. After opening the other two did not like what was in it. I have been using the strips for bindings on other quilts.

marshaKay 07-31-2011 07:01 AM

yoland,
luv,luv,luv your quilt. Very yummy.

DS and & bought Jelly Rolls at Tuesday Morning and we were so excited to try a "Quick Trip" quilt by Eleanor Burns, we whipped these out in about 8 hours...and they were so much fun to make. Had enough for a nice lap quilt and table topper (with lots leftover) from 2 jelly rolls. The green & pink one used only 1 jelly roll. Lily's Quick Trip was pieced on my new FW, "Darling Lily".

Thanks.

Suzy 07-31-2011 09:49 AM

I used 2 jelly rolls for my queen top, but also needed fabric for my background color and also the borders. It depends on what pattern or blocks you choose?

Good Luck

Suzy

I made a baby quilt with a jelly roll. I used them like a "rainbow" bargello quilt.

emlee51 08-01-2011 06:38 AM

Coventryuk, I did one similar to that called Milky Way from Gudrun Erla's book called Strip On. I hated trying to match those star points! But the quilt came out ok. Love yours and the colors!
