Jelly Rolls

I just purchased my first jelly rolls online. I wasn't expecting that the edges would be zigzaged instead of cut straignt. I suppose they do this to keep the edges from fraying. But, when you go to piece the edges together, do you measure a 1/4" seam from the edges if the zigzag points? Or, do you trim the zigzag first?

In my experience, that answer changes depending on the manufacturer. I would simply measure the width of the strip, it should be 2.5". that should tell you if they include peaks or if their measurement is meant to be at the valleys.

Be aware that not all jelly rolls measure exactly 2.5 inches. I've gotten several that measured anywhere from 2 3/8" to 2 5/8". Most of them were the cheap ones from JoAnn, but I also had problems with rolls from an online retailer that specializes in jellyrolls.

I avoid all problems by cutting my own jelly rolls.

I do the same as Jingle.

I've only used a jelly roll once. The pattern I used it for was not exacting so I just decided to use the points as the sides of my pieces. It worked out great. I'm not a fan of jelly rolls for this reason and usually just cut my own 2 1/2" strips. It's just easier.

I like the jelly rolls for the coordinated fabrics, but almost never buy them.

Despite how cute they are I will not be buying anymore jelly rolls......the inconsistency in sizing not to mention some truly astonishing grain issues have turned me off.

I buy bundles for the variations of fabrics but I don't like how they pink the edges of jelly rolls and layer cakes.
Lately I'm buying a lot more fat quarter bundles instead. I get the variety which I love but not the pinked edges.

I do the same as "Jingle" as far as cutting my own. Jordan Fabrics has jelly rolls that they hand cut and it is a straight cut and no zigzag edges which is nice.
