When I start quilting I start in the center of the quilt. I divide the quilt in half across width and in half between the top and bottom. Like a big cross or X. I then quilt to each outside, then I quilt each quarter, always quilting next to quilting. I mostly do FMQ.

To answer your ?, some patterns say to start in the middle to lay your first strip of fabric and others say start at one end and work your way across to the other side to keep the bulk of the quilt going to your left . You will learn there are many ways to accomplish the same thing. It is helpful to read and/or watch video of how other quilters have success.

I agree. It's hard to get into the ditch when you first start quilting your top.

Some folks roll, some of us 'puddle'. You'll discover which you are more comfortable with. The thing to remember is to start with a simpler stitch (perhaps a diagonal - less bulk) and start in the middle, work to one side, then turn the top around and work from the middle out to the other side. Use a walking foot and as you go, you will feel more confident and comfortable. Then you can try FMQ and designs. You will make mistakes while learning - THAT'S OK! Chances are no one will even notice and they won't happen on your next top. KEEP IT FUN.
