Jinny Beyer - Hand Piecer
I have read that Jinny Beyer does a lot of hand piecing.
Does anyone know how she cuts her pieces? Rotary cutter? Scissors? Die cut machine? She probably does not mark anything any more - but did she ever? And if so, with what? |
She explains her methods in her beautiful book Quiltmaking By Hand. Perhaps your library has a copy.
|
As I recall from that book, she uses templates, prefers cutting the template with the seam allowance included, thinks people can quickly learn to eye the quarter inch seam and advocated marking the points for precision matching, but I don't remember with what marking tool. You can probably get a used copy of that book very inexpensively on Amazon or eBay. She also has a website, so you could probably pick up which techniques she favors by getting acquainted there.

Here are tips and lessons from Jinny Beyer on hand piecing. I did not look at them but I am hoping that they may help you.

Love Jinny Beyer !
|
Oh, I wish she'd adopt me as a sister. I could LIVE in her fabric collection!
|
She is wonderful and beautiful. Her quilts are awesome too.
|
I don't know what scissors she uses. I recently started doing more applique. I highly recommend the Karen K Buckley scissors. They have a serrated edge and grip the fabric as you cut. So much more accurate especially on the tiny pieces.

I discovered Jinny Beyer when I first started quilting at the end of the 80's. As far as I know she still pieces and quilts by hand. That was her trademark, among other things. Her expertise on color is very impressive. I've found her patterns very difficult but I love her fabrics.
One of these days I'm going to go to her shop in Great Falls, VA. It's right near one of my sons. |
Jinny does still piece by hand and just taught a class. She rarely uses rotary cutters and does mark with chalk and templates for cutting pieces with scissors. She absolutely marks the corners for all piecing using the Perfect Piecer and is not strict about the seam allowances so long as the corners meet precisely. She is still the fastest hand piecer I have even seen!! She continues to be the leader in color expertise regardless of which style quilting is preferred.
