I bought this pattern a couple of years ago and started cutting this morning
I used 4 1/2" squares to make the 9 patches as she directed.
I drew the diagonal lines on the corner squares.
I've also cut lots of 1 3/4" squares as she directed.

I have read and reread many times and I cannot figure out what to do next.
Morton's instructions say "sew on the line or slightly outside"

I'm hoping someone on the Board has made this quilt and can tell me what I'm to do.

gollytwo, to make a snowball I think the 4 1/2 sqs. are the middle of the block, and the smaller sqs go on each corner of the 4 1/2 sqa....the smaller sqs are stitched on the diagonal and folded toward the raw edges...........I think........why not google or do a search here on snowballs instructions there might even be a tut here............calla

I agree with Calla that perhaps the 4 1/2" sq is the center of the snowball and the small sqs for each corner she just wants you to sew either on the line or just to the side so it folds back correctly, do you think the 9 patch is maybe an alternate block with the snowball??

Do you have a photo of the finished quilt on the pattern front?

Is the 1 3/4" square all the same color and the 4 1/2" all different? I'm guessing that the center of the snow ball is the 9 patch, made from the 4 1/2" squares and then you do the traditional snowball corner piece with the 1 3/4" square. Without a picture it is hard to tell if this is what it all means.

Hi - I've made lots of snowballs, and yes, the smaller squares are used for "diagonal corners" on the larger square.

Draw a diagonal line on the back of the smaller squares. Position one covering the corner of the plain square, right sides facing. The sew on the marked line, from corner to corner. Fold back to cover the corner, and hey presto - a diagonal corner. Do this on all four corners.

If you sew right on the line, the corners might not line up - if you sew just a tiny bit outside the drawn line, that will account for the width that the thread takes up inside the seam.

When you fold and trim, you'll get a better square.

I serged this quilt, but sewing is the same - you just have to trim off the extra triangles afterward. :)

I actually knew how to make a Snowball Block
My mistake was to follow her illustrations (9-patch blocks) rather than just her written instructions. I was then stuck on just where I was putting those corners.
I'm going to try to upload a picture of the quilt.
I am making it in repro and antique-looking browns and dark blues with a few reds and yellows thrown in for bounce.

I started all this in order to have handwork to take along.
Had been doing English Paper Piecing of Dresden Plates in 3 different sizes which I have come to dislike doing intensely.

It's actually a very simple pattern - and, a great scrap quilt for hand piecing.

The center square is cut 4 1/4" (half light fabrics, other half dark)
Corners are 1 3/4" (4X however many 4 1/4" squares you have)
Again, half light fabric, other half dark.
You're obviously sewing light corners to dark centers and dark corners to light centers

I made the mistake of cutting my centers 4 1/2" - so now am testing which corners look better: cut 1 3/4", 2",or 2 1/2"
