I now understand why some you have said thumbs down to Joann's Fabrics. I am making an Autumn quilt & bought several fat quarters of greens, yellow, oranges etc after washing the fabric in plain water I notice the orange had serveral white spots on it that I had not noticed before.
The only thing I can think of is that the dye washed away in certain spots. This material is now being used as a practive piece. Thank heavens I didn't pay a lot of money for this. I sticking to quilt stores for fabric and Joann's for my yarn

You might also want to compare their yarn with that in a local knit shop. Just saying.

I shop at JoAnn's a lot, and have never had an issue with their fabrics...I am not obsessive about my fabrics, but I also don't accept low quality fabrics. I think most of their fabrics are just fine for "regular" quilts. If making a true "family heirloom" quilt, yes, I would buy more expensive fabrics. But for general use quilts, in my opinion their fabrics are just fine. Never had one come up with spots or other blemishes...maybe just that one line was not too good. I would have taken them back to the store.

I have a really good JoAnns here. They are great at cutting a full 36 inchs and they cut it straight. They also check both sides of fabric to make sure there are no blemishes. I have noticed however that they do carry different grades of fabrics. One does have to be careful no matter where one shops. I would have taken the pieces back and exchanged it for something better. Hopefully you won't let this incident deter you from trying them again. Personally I have a 3 strike rule before I write them off.

I find their fat quarters are poor quality. Try their fabric on bolts, especially the "designer" stuff. Its not quilt shop quality, but reasonable enough.

I bought some orange fabric at Joanns and did not prewash it. So, when I made my quilt the large 6 inch square of orange looked awful with dark spots. ( I had to replace it). So, I proceeded to wash the rest of the orange fabric and was shocked to see the light, dark, ugly spots on it. The orange dye was not thorough.
Sure was disappointed!!! The fabric was on the shelves of keepsake calico prints and solids of $3.99-$9.99 a yard. Not sure what I will do next time.

marknfran, you need to return that fabric.

Jshorty, do not compare those FQs from Pakistan and China with any quality fabric. I've found a few usuable ones, but not very many. At $1.99, that's about $8 a yard and they aren't worth it. I do buy from the bolts at JoAnn's.

I will not buy Joanns fat quarter but do pick up some cotton off the bolt but even then I double check it. Always read the end of bolt. have found where some bolts were not where they should have been.

I've never had a problem with fabric purchased at Joann's either.

I purchase from here - but do take the time to feel and look at/through the fabric. There are poor quality as well as good quality choices. The cutters there are very friendly, and do check for 'blemishes'. I was disappointed only once, and it was entirely my fault for my fabric choice.
