JoAnn's Sale

Did anyone go online and buy anything? I got an email today about their big Presidents Day Sale.....1cent shipping, 15% off, 50% off one item, etc.... Well, the 1cent shipping got me...I never buy from them online because of shipping. I spent the whole afternoon putting together an order. At one point I had $50.06 and when checking out, realized I could use only one of those specals! Darn! If you go into a store you can use more than one but not online. So I spent most of the time trying to decide what to get and what not! I knew I wanted some of the self-threading needles and found a Clover Water Soluble marker in white....I like their blue one and wanted a white one, tried their set of water soluble pencils and another blue marker. A couple of Pigma pens....and discovered after I ordered that I got one the wrong size! Had some stencils on the list then narrowed it down to one-an allover stipple one but at checkout it was out of stock! Had a book of labels and took it off; had the Pedal Stay down but looked up some reviews and took it off--mixed reviews-some said it worked and some didn't. I was trying to be frugal but will prob regret it. Some of the specials are good through tomorrow and some through the 23rd. My whole order was only about $25 but because most of the stuff was 50% off, I saved almost $20, which wasn't bad. One could say that I'm a cheapskate!!

JulieR 02-18-2013 06:07 AM

Sounds like a good deal to me! I'm resisting the urge, but it keeps calling me in...

dunster 02-18-2013 07:26 AM

This is just a thought... If you phone in your order, instead of doing it online, you might be able to use a coupon and the 1 cent shipping too. I don't know that for sure, but... one year I was ordering some batting that was already 50% off, and there were coupons for $$ off your entire purchase (amount depended on how big your purchase was) and for free shipping. I was trying to do the purchase online, but it was during the holidays, and I couldn't get online, so I called. I placed the order and got the free shipping AND the $$ off.

trennag 02-18-2013 08:48 AM

I ordered on Saturday. I thought I could use the 15% off and the free shipping... but no :( I ended up keying in each code and seeing what saved me the most. I used the free shipping then went to my local store and used the 15% off. Over all I saved $20, I can live with that. :)

But your 20% was burned up with the gas your car used to get you there. :)

Be careful when you purchase their in store specials. I have a friend and she watches carefully at the register and every time she is over charged. Bless her heart. She has the worst luck!

NanaCsews2 02-18-2013 09:41 AM

I just tried to order a large amt of muslin. I could not use my 50% coupon for online shopping that I received in the mail. When submitting, it kept saying the code has expired. The date is valid for Feb. 17 - 23, 2013. And I am real sure today falls in those dates. The code is WJPN054-has anyone else been able to use that? I personally would like to see them change their ways and allow more than one promo code too. Right now, I would like to use the 50% coupon, they are giving 15% off total orders, and they have the 1 cent shipping. Mu DH also qualifies for military discount, so would be 20%. Wouldn't that be grand if we could use them all at the same time (Kinda like Kohl's does....)One would think they would have a better fan base and be swamped with orders. Or maybe they don't want that. Oh well, on to Connecting Threads and/or elsewhere to see what bargains I can find.

nygal 02-18-2013 09:44 AM

I just went to their store and got some yarn and a baby knitting blanket book. Store wasn't crowded at all. I enjoyed taking my time looking around. I was able to use three coupons..two 50% off ones and one 40% off one. I had my 9yr. old Granddaugther with me and she "shopped" with one of the coupons.

Teeler 02-18-2013 09:53 AM

2 battings for my UFOs, shipped to my doorstep for a penny...that totally beats the gas! Should have gotten other things, but stuff's always on sale there, so will get it when I need it.
Oh, actually, I wanted to ask about the larger cutting mats...I know this may be a personal preference thing, but is the Olfa 24x36 self-healing mat any better than the Fiskars? I like my Fiskars, but really could use a bigger one than the 12x18 that I have now.

Central Ohio Quilter 02-18-2013 09:58 AM

Thanks for the heads up! I just found a 25 yard bolt of cotton batting, regular price - $275, on sale for $99.99. A great deal with the extra 15% off! Sent in my order!

Lucio 02-18-2013 11:25 AM

If you are going to try to take advantage of the 1 cent shipping today I suggest packing a lunch as you will be spending an eternity on your computer!! I spent over an hour trying to order some yarn and when I went to submit the order it kicked the order out. I don't need anything bad enough to go through that again.

I, too, have had this happen .... so now I carefully watch the register when checking out and then check my receipt when I get to the car. A couple of times mistakes were still made but it was easy to go back into the store for correction ... just the extra time it took. In fairness, I've had the same (and worse) problems with Hancock's.

Jamiestitcher62 02-18-2013 12:16 PM

With 1 cent shipping, I would have just placed more than one order and used all my coupons.

Pollytink 02-18-2013 03:04 PM

Well, I sure wasn't thinking clearly yesterday...not so much today either!! 1. I'll try phoning an order in and see if I can use more than one coupon. And 2., if not will just order the labels book and use the 1cent shipping.

Well, I called and woman said can only use one coupon online so that didn't work...at least today. She said they're "working on it" to be able to use more than one online. Let's hope so! I did order the quilt lable book w. 1cent shipping---should have just added it yesterday since it's on sale anyway. The stencil I wanted is out for now.

I was going to get the Pedal Stay @ 14.99 (not on sale) but then read some 50-50 reviews and didn't get it. Has anyone here used it? Ck'd Amazon and Walmart and some said it worked fine and some said it still moved. One woman said you had to velcro the pedal to the base and she wanted to be able to use it on more than one machine w/o having to chg the pedal all the time. I've tried the shelf lining stuff and that doesn't work well, pedal still moves. But since I can't use the 50% off coupon and 1cent shipping both, I won't get it now. If I use the 50% off coupon, it's about $7.50 but $5.95 shipping=$13.45 so not much saving. When I googled it, it does cost more other places but will wait to see if there's any feedback here on how well it works.

Wish they would have free or low shipping more often!

Me too, lol. I almost ordered it last week at $124.99. I have never used it but read reviews on the QB, seems to be pretty good.

There system would not let me use the code for the 1 cent shipping and a coupon. Coupon also has a code. One code per order.

And of course no reply yet from Joanns regarding my email and question on their so-called expired coupon code. So, hopefully I will get an answer before the 23rd (last time it took 3 days for a reply). But the 1 cent shipping is gone at midnight anyway.

amyjo 02-18-2013 07:34 PM

I have a pedal stay. I would never buy another one. I too had to velcro my pedal to the piece and it goes all over the place. the hooks in the back do not keep it where I put it.

Thanks, Amyjo!!! You just saved me some money!! For my machine in the lvg rm I put velcro on the bottom of the FC and it's fine. But on the one in my sewing room.....vinyl floor covering....the shelf/rug padding stuff just doesn't hold it. Anyone have any successful ideas they've tried?

Yooper32 02-19-2013 04:32 AM

I ordered a bolt of Muslin last evening and used that code and got 50% off. Wouldn't have ordered it otherwise, believe me. No low shipping as only one coupon allowed, but I saved over $50. I am a happy quilter.

Diana Lea 02-19-2013 04:38 AM

My husband was very excited to get a floor lamp $200 for free when you got the deck model for $100. Plus 20% off. With that saving he said I could get everything I wanted. Just not needed but wanted. I love that man. So I found some books, supplies and a new cutter. I lost mind. Then over to scrapbooking. I saved so much. The best savings was on irons. I got the little one for making binding. Did I tell you I love that man.

There was a thread on here about this awhile ago. I'm not sure what key words you'd use to search for the thread. Some folks suggested buying the plastic shelf liner at the dollar store. The liner looks like what's sold at Bed, Bath, Beyond to keep rugs from slipping.

Fergiethedog 02-19-2013 05:07 AM

You are not a cheapskate, you are "frugal" (that sound better)

ellenmg 02-19-2013 05:29 AM

I hit Hancock Fabrics yesterday to take advantage of their batting sale, 40% off and an additional 15% off coupon. That is the best price they will have all year, so had to jump on it.. I rarely shop there anymore as I find their fabric quality not to my liking. But for sale notions, it's okay.

oleganny 02-19-2013 05:51 AM

I too hate that you can only use one of the coupons & every time I visit their site I send an email complaining about it. Most places with shipping specials appy it automatically when your order reaches the specified amount. I even emailed them a copy pf my receipt (for over $100) and told them that sale could have been theirs except for their "penny wise, pound foolish" way of handling online orders. Maybe if we all complained they might take a look at it.

I went to the store and got packaged bats. There was a low-loft King size on sale for 14.95. Also got two twin sizes and 4 fat quarters. Total bill came to $36. Saved $32, so that wasn't too bad. :)

My table on which I sew in the sewing room is against the wall, and under the table is an old soft, floppy sofa pillow. The pedal is snugged up against the pillow and is always there when I want it.
In my living room when I sew at the dining table, I have more problems. I think I will try to tie or pin the pillow or several pillows to the table legs so that the pedal won't move there either.

Caswews 02-19-2013 07:04 AM

Pollytink: YOU are not a cheapskate; you are frugally managing your monies to buy more fabric and items for quilting/sewing !LOL

ninakk 02-19-2013 07:57 AM

I went to the store yesterday, and got another large self-healing mat, 15yd of quilter's grid fusible interfacing, and 20 yards of batting.... in addition to a bunch of fabric. The sale was pretty good this year. Spent about $140, and saved $145 :-)

JNCT14 02-19-2013 08:28 AM

I actually did a comparison of JoAnns vs Thousands of Bolts, Fabric.com and Marshall Dry Goods. Now granted I only needed fabric but Marshall came out the cheapest even with shipping. I got 15 yards of fabric, 9 of those yards were 108" tie dyes, 3 yds batik and 3 yards tone on tone black. Shipping was flat rate $5.95. Total was $56.96. Everyone else, even Joann's with the 15% coupon was $75-$80 and I didn't have to make a special trip. I was pretty excited.

Polly, I now have carpet, but my old sewing room had hardwood floors and I used a mouse pad under the pedal. It worked great! The grip is really good. Let me know if it works for you. And if you're a cheapskate, you are not alone. I, too, try to get the most for my money. We'd be foolish not to!

Carol34446 02-19-2013 08:37 AM

Have you tried the foam rubber door mats they have at WM and dollar store? Hear they work good for holding petel in place.

I bought a cheap bath matt. Works pretty good.

You're not a cheapskate, you are being frugal, there's a difference.

Pollytink--My foot control is on an old tile floor in the basement, not near a wall. I put an old throw rug under my sewing table and put the control on that. the rug slid a little so put the rubber shelf liner under the rug and a little piece under the control. Everything stays in place now. Have to vacuum that rug every couple of weeks as it sure catches thread and often a kitty lays on that rug while I am sewing (if she isn't riding around on my fabric as I move it under the machine) :=)

How 'bout:
A.)Bargain Hunter B)Consumer wise C)Shopping advocate D)Economy enabler E)economic policyholder F)Smart shopper G) All the above
I cancelled my order at Joann's last night when I saw I was not going to be getting the 1 cent shipping. I was trying to get a gallon of Best Press which I can get in store at Hancocks, just not the gallon size. They were out of the invisigrips. My DH is very supportive of my expensive hobbies(I have 2). He draws the line at paying shipping costs.
I felt like I was/am missing out on some great opportunities, but I am well stocked on W&N, Blades, needles, fabric for now, there really isn't anything that I have to have today or even in the near future.

Mornigstar 02-19-2013 01:46 PM

I put a worn sock over my foot pedal so it doesn't move under machine.
Went to Jo-A store Sat. -got 15% off spray glue - no batting bargins as I had read on computer. Sunday went online
and bought 3 pkg batting --never saw that large bolt at $99. which is what I would have preferred. Got free shipping
but no other store choices.

The mouse pads I have are all very smooth on top....bottom might work but how to fasten the pedal to the top....maybe glue two together, right sides together?

DJinSC 02-19-2013 07:43 PM

Try it and see. Mine was smooth on top, too, but did not slide off. Well, come to think of it the pedal does have four rubber circles around the rim -- is yours completely smooth? If so, you can get peel and stick circles to put on the bottom to help it grip.

I have priced them & have read the reviews on Amazon & other sites. I decided to use the waffle texture stuff instead (I bought a placemat at a thrift store for .25 cents) & it works very well. I have a Juki EX 600 & the pedal is big. Toy may want to try something like this. Others have also used cabinet lining that is waffle texture.
