For those of you that hold Joann's Fabric Store VIP membership cards...can you use coupons and still use your VIP card?
Example: 40% off coupon & 10% from your vip card making it a total of 50 % off...just checking to see if its worth it.
The cashier made a big deal about next week being a huge coupon week, my reply was "yes if you don't already have the merchandise on sale" she did say some of the coupons for next week can be used on sale items. I just find it really hard to be able to use the coupons.

cattailsquilts 09-13-2011 08:53 AM

Generally the VIP card is good on an entire purchase, sale item or not. The only time I've run into not being able to use it is when you have another % off purchase coupon.

myreda 09-13-2011 08:54 AM

At our Joann's you don't get the extra VIP discount on items you use a coupon on. However if you buy much at Joann's the savings from the card will definitely add up.

chickiez 09-13-2011 08:55 AM

I just used mine yesterday along with 3 other coupons, so yes you can use it with other coupons, at least here in GA you can!

snipforfun 09-13-2011 08:57 AM

Who qualifies for VIP? The info on the flyer says for guilds, therefore its not just enough to be a member? Our Joanns says the same thing. How do you all qualify for the card? I want in!

craftiladi 09-13-2011 08:59 AM

I received the offer after signing up for a magazine subscription.

Exactly. In some cases they will let you use the % off coupons first, and then the 10% off. Sometimes it depends on the store.

marcialb 09-13-2011 09:03 AM

Yes and you can use your coupons from AC Moore and Michael's TOO!!

HTH,
Marcia

ghostrider 09-13-2011 09:04 AM

Too bad the VIP cards are so limited in who is qualified to get them. Just another reason I stopped shopping at JoAnn's.

grayma 09-13-2011 09:26 AM

The new JoAnn's in St. Louis would not use my VIP card because I had coupons for everything I purchased. It sounds like it depends on the individual stores. I would believe that there must be corporate policy on this so that it would be the same at every store.

Doreen 09-13-2011 09:33 AM

I just got my card and I hope to use it soon!

You CANNOT use the VIP card on any coupon items. Also - check your math. 40% off and then 10% off does not make it 50% off. It makes it 46% off (you are paying 90% of 60% of the original price or 54% of the original price).

There is a corporate policy and your store followed it. You CANNOT use the VIP card in addition to a coupon on any item. Take your pick, not both.

Join AQS. My savings every year more than pay the $25.00 membership not to mention what AQS gives you for being a member (magazine, discount on AQS shows/products). So it's not that limiting in who can get it.

You can use it on sale items. You cannot use it on coupon items. It will scan whether or not you can use it on any items. (Of course, in addition to coupon items there are the general restrictions of ineligible items similar to the ineligible coupon items). The problem with a % off total purchase coupon is that a coupon is already being applied to each item, so the discount card cannot. Each item can only have 1 coupon or discount card applied to it in the transaction.

You can go to http://www.joann.com/joann/common/co...e=VIPDiscounts for information on getting the card. You can click on the "enroll now" link to submit your information. When your card comes in the mail, you will need to take the card, your ID, and a membership card (guild or AQS membership, card if using that) to the store for the manager to sign the card. Technically, the discount card says that you are supposed to show your group membership card every time you use it, but I have never needed to. I only give them the discount card to scan.

Coupons and the discount card can be used in the same transaction - it just is not applied to the coupon items.

GreatStarter 09-13-2011 10:21 AM

None of the Joann's near me will let you use it on items that you use a coupon on. They will take it off of sale or regularly priced items, but not coupon items.

I used to be a member of Quilter's Club of America - that qualifies you for the VIP card.... but I did not renew this year because more times than not, JoAnn's offered a 10% discount on total purchases and I could not use my card.

So the JoAnn's card would cost me $25 a year for membership in an organization that I have no other reason to join (AQS)? Thanks, I'll pass. To get the card, you have to be a member of a professional organization or guild, or a reseller with a vendor's license. I call that limited.

Are you somehow connected to JoAnn's?? Just curious because you seem to have all the answers on this subject.

fabric whisperer 09-13-2011 11:13 AM

all stores are the same ~ I was high management, here's how it works:

Use a coupon (i.e. 40% off) on an item that is not on sale
Use your VIP card for 10% off everything else in that transaction.

The computer will not calculate the 10% on top of a 40% coupon, its considered a "double coupon" ~ BUT the 10% IS valid on top of items that are already on sale.

Exclusions:
Remnants, patterns, AccuGo products, Cricut products, sewing machines, Yudu items (i.e. price-controlled products from the manufacturers)

Ghost, are you a member of any local guild of any type? I ask because I qualify for the VIP card 3 or 4 ways, I just happen to use the ASG one because it gets sent to me without me asking for it.

I am an ASG member, I am a small biz owner, and I am a member of a local guild that provides membership ID cards with expiration dates. This ID card allows members to qualify for the VIP. I think they also offer VIP to teachers, but I don't recall that you are a schoolteacher...

If you're not part of a local guild, I can't offer any other suggestions, but just wanted to throw out that it's not limited to just professional organizations.

Just a shopper :-). I just shop there a lot and made sure to learn the ins and outs of the discount card program when I first starting using it a few years ago. I don't think many in my area used it, so I always got weird looks from the cashiers back then.

JUNEC 09-13-2011 11:53 AM

I bet it depends on the store if you can use your VIP & coupons as well

  (To the part in bold) You don't have to be an AQS member. You can belong to a local guild.

I wouldn't call it limited eligibility - joining AQS is not restrictive - you don't have to go to meetings, you don't have to pay an exorbitant amount of money, you don't have to have certain certifications, you don't need to be a professional quilter, you don't have to live in a certain area. Anyone is free to join AQS. If you don't want to join AQS, then find a local quilt guild that provides membership cards.

To me limited eligibility is requiring a large fee ($25 is not large - depending on local guilds, your fee may be less), requiring a certain amount or number of purchases throughout the year to get the discount (which some stores do), or requiring you to be a member of a certain profession (which the teacher discount does). Just because you've chosen not to join AQS does not mean that the eligibility is limited.

I think it depends on your individual store...some are a bit more leanient on the way they interprete the rules.

BTW, I sell my stuff at craft shows, so...I have a retailer's license...

Unless the store is doing manual overrides, it is not the store's decision to allow the discount card to be used on coupon items. The programming at the cash register is set up to automatically only assign 1 coupon or discount % per item.

Charming 09-13-2011 05:25 PM

You cannot combine your vip with another coupon on the same item but you can use it on all the other items at the same time with the coupon...did i make sense????

for example if you bought 3 items 2 on sale already and one regular price...you can use 1 coupon for the regular price item and still use your vip card on the other 2 items at the same time, so the 10% applies only to the sale items.

I agree. I never use the percentage of the total coupons because it usually not more than the 15% I get with my resale card. It is nice that they take more than One coupon on a sale. It is fun to get that little extra in these tough times....

vivoaks 09-13-2011 05:47 PM

My SIL had a really nice % off coupon, but she couldn't find one single thing in the store that wasn't on sale. She emailed the company to complain - at least she let them know she wasn't happy.

sherriquilt2 09-14-2011 03:58 AM

I often wonder if Joanns stopped spending the money on printing the flyers and the useless coupons how much less they could afford to charge for their fabric! Drives me crazy to cut out all the coupons and then get there and none of them are ever any good because everything is 25% or 30% off already!

Krystyna 09-14-2011 04:02 AM

It depends on the cashier. Some are nice and work with you. Some actually scan in extra coupons for you. If you get a salty one, break up your order. I always take my husband with me and we end up with multiple transactions. When they see him on line again and again while I'm at the cutting table, the nice ones come out of hiding and tell him he can do it all at once.

Moon Holiday 09-14-2011 04:09 AM

You can use the discount card only on items that are not on sale... so if it isn't on sale, you can get 10% off non-sale items. But, if all you buy is sale items, then you can't use the discount card.

PS Stitcher 09-14-2011 04:13 AM

I use mine with the coupons all the time. I have never had any problems.

Needlegrammy 09-14-2011 04:19 AM

I'm waiting for my card to come.

grann of 6 09-14-2011 04:23 AM

My problem is that I have a VIP card and forget I have it. I have rarely used it. I don't shop there much any more and never pay full price for anything when I DO shop there. I find I can do better on most products by shopping online with shops that have free shipping offers.

quiltbuddy 09-14-2011 04:27 AM

Our local store was flooded when hurricane Irene came and I have withdrawals. I would have to travel close to 100 miles to the next JoAnn's to use my coupons. Border's also went out of business, so no more browsing the quilt magazines. I'm sorry for being such a cry baby. There are many people that are suffering a lot more than this because of the hurricane.

Rubyrednails2 09-14-2011 04:29 AM

I am on the email list from Joann's and I printed off the coupon which was 20% off on the entire order. This was my first time to try this and the clerk didn't bat an eye. I had already used a 40% coupon off for the Olfa rotating cutting mat and saved quite a bit! So any of you that get the emails, print the coupons!
