Joseph's Coat Quilt- How to piece the points?

When piecing a Joseph's Coat quilt many points come together. What is the best way to deal with those or do people only use applique?

If this is the pattern:

you have to piece the block very accurately and probably press in one direction. Not sure if you can press the seams open. What do your instructions suggest??

Try twirling the seam allowances. You can google it and find directions.

Thank you maniac and dunster. No the directions do not say. I am using the internet. One suggested cutting the points off and appliqueing a small circle on it but I do not want to do that. Others use applique to get the look.

I don't know if you are hand piecing this or not but if so, you might want to check out Karen's blog as she made one of these some time ago. She was a member here on the board but I do not know if she still is or if she even checks here very often. She always has a lot of photos about the quilts she is working on.

KLO Her site is wonderful but no I was not planning to hand piece. Is it possible to machine piece a Joseph's coat quilt without cutting off the points?

how about making the melons with a backing so you have a nice edge and then machine appliqueing it on a foundation/background block? Avoids all that curved piecing...

I would press the seams open.

I think I should maybe try it both having them turn and all go the same direction and another by pressing them open. I think I will also try and trim the tips down to 1/8 th of an inch.

As for appliqueing, I do like that look too but prefer not to do raw edge and also do not like the added weight.

Someone posted a tutorial on here a while ago. I looked for it and couldn't find it. She showed how to do it all by machine. I may have been under a different name. I wish I could find it.

Meanmon I found this on the quilt board. It looks very promising. I also noticed batiks were used. They are a lighter weight fabric so that would mean less bulk too.

You know you're a quilter when ... you're dreaming about the solutions to QB posts at night.

I was thinking about this quilt & the similarities it had to a mini quilt I recently made that involved bias cuts & lining up points. My first attempt was a total disaster & it wasn't even as complex as Joseph's Coat. I ended up making a paper foundation & foundation piecing it together. If I were making the Joseph's Coat pattern, I would probably foundation piece together A & B for each of the 4 segments, then add on a 2nd segment to each foundation. The pattern that maniacquilter linked to suggests clipping along the curve on the B piece even for machine piecing. That makes a lot of sense to me. Beyond that, I would be careful about clipping any points in the center of Joseph's Coat because it's already a weak point without a solid seam. You'll definitely want to later come back & quilt over that center part at least a couple of times to reinforce it. If you rotate all your seams clockwise (or all counter), it should lay flat. You can't press them open in the middle because they will overlap each other & make a bulge.

This is definitely an advanced pattern. If you're struggling with it, why not pick up a yard of cheap muslin at JAF/HL & make a couple practice blocks until you've figured out how to proceed? That's what I'd do anyways.

Good luck! It should be really beautiful when it's finished! Can't wait to see the pictures!

I like this one too and look how she dealt with all those points comping together. I ordered a Sizzix die. This should help.
