I've been quilting for a year and have about 5 small projects complete and I'm working on a king sized quilt now. I've decided to take the advice of many of you and keep a record of my work. Two baby quilts are gone to gift recipients and fortunately I took pictures of them for my memories.

I am very interested in what you all do to record your quilts. I found this little book that allows for a photo and words about the quilt.

I was thinking this is nice. Before I decide on it, I'd appreciate reading what those of you who do document your quilts, how do you do it? Thanks in advance!

I have always just taken pictures and put them in an album, but adding notes or the quilt story seems a much clever way. I say go for it. :thumbup:

I made up a simple templet .... info, , pattern name, fabric samples, who to, when, etc... then print a photo to go with it.....

I have a journal - I started with a binder. For each quilt, I have samples of the fabric, and usually a sample of one of the blocks (usually one of my practice blocks), who it was for, a photo of the quilt, and another photo of the quilt with their new owner. I usually have a 'story of your quilt' to go along with the gift, and have a copy of that in the binder too.

The 'story of your quilt' is a collection of my thoughts for the recipient - why I made it, the pattern, why I chose it for them, what the pattern means to me. For example, one of my first quilts was a 'Sunshine & Shadows' quilt for a wedding gift - for me this symbolizes perfectly what the young couple will experience - sunshine & shadows, ups & downs, good times & bad, and together it makes a wonderful experience.

LindaM, I got goose bumps reading your reply. A lot of love goes into these quilts--love for the process and end results, and love for the recipients of the quilt. Your journal captures that so well! I'm not sure I have the discipline to do all that you do, but I love your method.

Linda, your journal sounds awesome with so much wonderful detail! Much better than how I do it. Oh how I wish I had started a quilting journal a long time ago but better late than never as they say. I just started one in word this January. I think hand writing it is much more personal, however I type much faster than I write.

I include quilt pictures, start dates, progress as I go dates, thoughts, feelings, plans, etc. You just reminded me I should probably take some pictures of a block going together and that I have to print it out – thank you!

For anyone who types theirs in word and does not print it out please remember to back it up.

That's a great idea. I've used Word to write about a couple of them with the pic on page, so guess I need to do that and save them on a separate disk.

I've always made an extra block to keep and just started taking pictures the last few years of the finished quilts. Since most of mine now go to a blanket ministry, our church also has a picture record and who receives each quilt, We have received some incredible thank you notes and those go with the quilt's record as well.

I use this book and love it.
