Judy Niemeyer Quiltworx patterns
 

Has anyone done one of her quilts? They are gorgeous, and I've fallen in love with Glacier Star. I'm wondering how difficult they are, given that a lot of it is curved piecing.

I have made her Bali Wedding quilt and I have two friends who have made the Glacier Star pattern. All of our quilts turned out fantastically. They are not easy but worth the time and trouble

Her patterns are detailed and if you follow each step, label everything, and have plenty of time you too will turn out a fabulous quilt. You will be so happy you made the Glacier Star. Good luck and enjoy the process. Grumbling is allowed

Her patterns are definitely Advanced/ expert. If you are experienced in paper piecing you could do one. You have to stay organized and truly pay attention- there is a lot of detail. I purchased the Glacier Starvpattern but haven’t found fabric for it yet- figured I would finish up my ufos before beginning so I have nothing to distract me.

I have done a couple of her quilts....last one was vintage star. They are not as hard as they seem as long as you carefully follow the pattern and directions step by step. There is also some gadgets that are helpful mentioned in the directions. I would make sure I had those....and of course...I also would make sure that I got a some extra fabric as cutting mistakes are easy to make. There is a fair amount of fabric waste of odd shapes as that is needed to make the shapes and the cuts given allow for a bit extra so when you trim you have enough. They are fun, will take a lot of time, are gorgeous when done....and after finishing mine, I brought it to a professional custom long armer to quilt it as my quilting shills were not up to doing this quilt. She did a fabulous job. Judy also has a number of smaller projects like table toppers or wall hangings to get your feet wet if you don't want to jump right in on the big ones.

The main thing I found on her quilts, is you have to pay careful attention to her direction (pattern instructions) and you should have no problem. I took a class from a certified instructor. It was worth the money to do so. Check to see if there is one that teaches in your area. As others have stated. Keep every thing labeled and in order. You should have no problem. The quilts are worth the time and effort put in to them.

I agree with all the other comments. I have done several of Judy's. Started with Bali Wedding Star, but I was so lucky that I had a friend who had just taken the class. She really helped me understand that you HAVE to read all the instructions. And them. I can't be too emphatic about that. She knows that I typically just scan a pattern and then go for it.

My next one was a Desert Skies that I completed on my own. It's a little bit simpler than some of the others. I have a Glacier Star in progress. waiting for me to get my quilting MoJo back. I am about 1/3 of the way through.

I received the pattern Bali Bed runner, gifted from someone here. I was suppose to attend a workshop back in June but that was cancelled. There I would have purchased my first pattern and would be learning her methods. I am so looking forward to doing this workshop once COVID is under control. So I can't say yet what will happen. I do know I love her patterns and am excited to do one. This one is just taking time. I want to do it right and be taught everything right the first time I try.

I took a two day class with a certified instructor and after the second day I knew it wasn't for me. Too much prep work just for paper piecing. I did what was taught in class but when I finished it at home, I printed out the pattern pieces, left them whole and paper pieced it the regular way. I had enough fabric not to have to worry about exact amounts. My turned out just as nice as the others and I had mine finished in a lot less time. To put all those hours of extra prep work seemed a waste of time for no reason to me. All her quilt patterns are beautiful. If I do another one I will use the basic paper piecing method.

I have done a handful of hehe patterns and find her instructions to be easy to follow. With that said, I don't use her cutting instructions though. I do my own cutting for paper piecing. I can do curved piecing, but my preference is not to, so I have never done one of her patterns that require it. Good luck. Enjoy the process.😁
