Just Downright Curious

Does anyone know how to check the sew time and/or stitch count on a Janome 12000 and a Janome 8900? My dealer says there isn't a way, but when I was thinking about trading up, he pushed a couple of buttons before coming up with a price. Of course, I was sitting on the other side of the machine and didn't see what he did.

romanojg 08-03-2014 06:37 AM

I would think that thier web site might have that infor.

calla 08-03-2014 06:53 AM

I have Vikings and that information is found under tools or just have him show you

Agree!!
Why not just ask him????

Onebyone 08-03-2014 07:14 AM

It would be obvious the dealer lied to you if he did pull up the stitch time and count after telling you there was no way. But it would take a deceitful dealer to do that. Remember it is your machine and if anyone is pushing buttons on it, ask what are you looking for and why. Don't stay back and wonder.

KalamaQuilts 08-03-2014 07:15 AM

I've always wished we had a 'hours on the machine' clock.
I'd be a lot better about changing needles and tune ups

Misty's Mom 08-03-2014 07:30 AM

It's not on the Janome website and the dealer said there was no way.

Sheri.a 08-03-2014 10:31 AM

Greetings! On the 15000 the information is on the on screen help -the "?" at the bottom of the main screen. It is very interesting. On my machine I show 119 hours of the machine power on time and 11 hours of total operating time! I do a lot of paper piecing which takes time between the actual sewing.

Misty's Mom 08-03-2014 10:38 AM

I don't have that on my 12000 nor on my 8900 :(

Pennyhal 08-03-2014 10:41 AM

Often that info is not put in the owner's manual.

Then what could possibly show up that would determine the trade in value? Ask what it was.

If this is the same dealer that said there is no way and you find there is.... Find another dealer to buy from!

Susann 08-04-2014 04:50 AM

If there is a way to check, I would go back to the dealer and ask him why he said there wasn't a way. And if , as he said there wasn't, what he was checking on the machine. I'd want him to know that I knew how to check it and that I would be finding an honest dealer for future purchases.

lclang 08-04-2014 05:00 AM

Contact the manufacturer if you can find a phone number and ask for that info. If he lied to you, NEVER deal with him again. (might call another dealer for that particular brand of machine and ask them.)

Sewnoma 08-04-2014 05:09 AM

The dealer may have just been checking the machine's function - making sure he could get into whatever menus, and that the display screen is working OK.

rjwilder 08-04-2014 06:58 AM

Try calling Janome at 1-800-631-0183 and ask for the technical dept. Surely they will be able to help you figure out if the hours and stitches can be found on your machines. I have called them before and they are very helpful.

garysgal 08-04-2014 09:56 AM

Does anyone know if Brother has this feature?

cashs_mom 08-04-2014 10:18 AM

Here is some info from a Janome forum. I have no idea if shaber20005's info is correct but that might be what the dealer did.

Bought a used Designer 1Viking in 2005. The dealer was able to tell me that there were 15 hours of embroidering on the machine and I forget how many hours of sewing. The dealer said that was a very low number of embroidery hours. I asked why it was on sale. He said that the woman bought it for the embroidery and then decided she wanted more embroidery than this had to offer. Love my Designer 1. I would find another dealer. Quilters' Guilds are good places to get information about good repairmen/salesmen, etc.

Jannie 08-04-2014 06:26 PM

I didn't know any machine had a counter on it. I will watch this thread to see if someone comes up with a way for the Janome machines.

OldHairTwister 08-04-2014 07:39 PM

My Babylock Aria purchased this past Feb. has how many stitches it has stitched. Not in front of it at the moment and am not sure where it is located but I come across it every once in a while looking for something else.

I have just been on another site where the writer says she has an upgraded 11000 and, if she holds down the needle threading and cutting buttons at the same time as switching on, the screen tells her 'Power x and Drive x. She presumes the first no relates to the hours the machine has been on and the second, to the hours working. I've just tried it on my upgraded 11000 and it works! My numbers are similar to hers - Power2815 Drive 263. Like me, she does a lot of paper piecing which doesn't involve continuous sewing. I would think that if this info is on the upgraded 11000, it will also be on the 12000. Don't know if that's any help?!

#1piecemaker 08-05-2014 04:04 AM

I think the dealers like to keep their little secrets so that they can haggle on their prices. To me, if it sews a beautiful stitch and looks good, its okay. I know that if your trading up, knowing that would be a temendous help to you. Hope you find out the info you want to know.

rjwilder 08-05-2014 06:04 AM

Brother and Babylock machines do have a way to find out the number of stitches and hours on them. It is helpful if buying a machine from an individual who tells you it has hardly been used and was recently serviced.

maggie_1936 08-05-2014 07:34 AM

try their website

I don't have an automatic needle threader on my 12000 :(

Onebyone 08-05-2014 11:08 AM

I don't think needle threading is the same as auto threading. ?

Are there more than one Janome 12000 models? I don;t think so

The needle threader is one of the features of the 12000 ...............

I know my Olympus camera has a "secret code" to find out how many shutter clicks it's had...I think there are probably ways to access info on sewing machines, too.I would like to see these manufacturers put a clock(timer) on machines so we can keep track of the hours we've put into each project..as for why it's there...I suspect it has something to do with the warranty.."not for industrial use" type thing...I imagine a sweat shop could wear out a machine pretty quickly!

That's the question I was asking though .... I am sure there is/was only one 12000 model.
The link I gave you shows the threader as one of the features.
Therefore, you should have it ... sewing machines don't come with options, like we have to choose, when buying a car.

rob529 08-10-2014 11:00 AM

I know how to check my Bernina but no others. I found out that info on YouTube. They stated on the video that it was the tecnichians screen. In my opinion there would have to be one with these computerized machines.

Yamaha_Mama 02-12-2018 09:03 PM

Thank you. I just figured it out for my Elna Expressive 900. I held down the thread cutter button and the presser foot lifter button while I powered the machine on. It shows a read out of hours powered on and in 'drive.' I would assume this would be the same way to check the Janome 12000....as they are virtually the same machine.

Yamaha_Mama 02-12-2018 09:55 PM

P.S. Almost the same process as my above post, works on the Janome 9900. I held the thread cutter button and the needle up/down button while I powered the machine on. The readout was the same....power and drive. I am not sure what they mean by drive. I would guess that means the embroidery mechanism.

donna13350 02-13-2018 04:28 PM

I could be wrong...but I believe power is the time the machine was turned on, and drive is the time it spent stitching. It's basically so that when you turn it in for repair under warranty, the techs can tell if you've used it "professionally", and voided your warranty.

Yes, it's in the preference pages. All my machines have a stitch counter.
