Just finished Bargello top, and I have a question for Bargello experts...
 

Okay, I just finished my brown Bargello top, and once I get it quilted, I want to make a mirror image of it to go on the other twin bed in my guest room.

I didn't follow a pattern, so I can't just reverse a printed "map." I plan to make my own reversed map, just using regular graph paper. Do you think that will work, or should I create my own graph paper? If I do that, I would draw the pieces more to scale. But there are 2014 pieces. Could I get by just using regular graph paper?

Yeah, I know, just try and see. Well, I will do that, but if someone has already used regular graph paper, can you tell me how it worked. I don't want to confuse myself unnecessarily. :) (I know there is Bargello designing softwear, but I don't think it works on a Mac, which is what I use.)

Thanks for any input. Oh, here is my top, in case looking at it helps any with my question. Some of the pieces are 2 1/2 by 3/4 an inch. Too skinny. I won't do that again on a bed-sized quilt. Always learning something....

Dina, WHEN are YOU going to qualify yourself as an expert?? All you really need is the width of the strip set cut and the number of the fabric on top. Should be rather easy since you have the quilt to refer to as reference. That is what I did when I did two of Eileen Wright quilts that had mirror image down the center. I just look at the opposite row. I think the final top came out superb!

I agree with maniacquilter2, I would just write a list for the order of strip set widths, and then which fabric is at the top (and maybe the one below it if that would help. I just finished a much smaller bargello and attached a chunk of the strips upside down by accident! Whoops! That'll teach me for chain piecing it!)

I have no answer to your question but I want to say that I really like your quilt. Bargello's aren't even my thing but I like the earth tones a lot. Very nice job!

Also, the thinnest strips I did were 1 inch and that was painful enough! You were brave to go for 3/4 inch!

Turn the quilt over w/ the backside/wrong side up and follow that for your pattern. - it'll give you a mirror image.

I usually cut a small (1/2" x 2" strip of each fabric & glue them to a long piece of paper- numbering them from 1 to how ever many fabrics in my bargello strip set. then, it is easy to *chart* my pattern just by writing down what number/fabric is at the top of each strip as I go along- which also makes it fairly easy to start at the other side and do it again in reverse order. all I need to repeat a pattern is a swatch card & the numbers.

Dina - this is beautiful and these are the colors I will use to make my son one - but I can't find an exact pattern - I just want to make him a lap quilt. I bought one book on the internet and the patterns were all for wall hangings, they were beautiful but I don't know how to expand the size to create the flow that you have in yours. Any ideas?

How many fabrics did you use?

I enlarged a Surf Song pattern once by making each piece 1/2 inch longer and wider, but it did slightly change the overall pattern. What size do you want? Do you want the pointy ones like this or the curved ones? I had more trouble finding the pointy ones, which is why I just did it without a pattern. (not again though...too much thinking...:) )

I used 21 fabrics. DO NOT use an odd number. I started with 35 fabrics to choose from and just couldn't get below 21, but a Bargello is much easier with an even number. Then you can press the seams the correct way so they hug. Can't do that with an uneven number. (I can look at my quilt now and easily figure out one fabric I could have left out....)

I ask what size because I have two Bargello books and have 3 more ordered. If I found a pattern the size and pattern you might want, I could guide you to a book.
