Just had to share
 

My son's girlfriend has begun to get into sewing recently. She is actually a very creative person and makes jewelry, does some card making, had me show her how to knit/crochet, etc. Now that she has gotten into sewing, I am having so much fun getting her things that will make her experience easier. For Christmas I got her a rotary cutter, cutting mat and ruler and she was thrilled! I get so excited when I can share my hobbies with someone. She says that she is working on something for me but it wasn't finished in time for Christmas. I'm so excited to see what she is creating - not just because she says it's for me but because I love seeing someone use their creative skills. Since I had 4 sons, I haven't experienced sharing my love of sewing and crafting in this way with the younger generation much. Don't get me wrong, my boys love what I make for them and all and are very supportive but it's not the same as experiencing it with someone else getting excited about the process. I'm loving it!

How lucky you are to have her so interested in crafts and quilting. My daughter is a natural born 'kitchen'
gal. She can bake and cook circles around me! She hates any crafts!!! Hopefully one of the granddaughters will follow in my footsteps

lucky you...I miss the MENTORING....need to find me an outlet to do that again!

My son had a girlfriend once who I taught to do parchwork, she even bought a machine off me, she never looked back andvwihin six months she had sold a quilt on a online auction site we have here in New Zealand.
My biggest joy is to teach young girls to sew/quilt, they are delightful, and appreciate your help

How wonderful to have someone to pass your talent on to. My DDIL;s work and with kids have no time for sewing and my DD has so much going on she has no time for it. She wants to learn so I bought her a brother runway to learn on and hope she will find the time for it.

My daughter was never interested in crafty things...or knitting, crocheting or sewing. Her speciality is cooking and baking. My son's X wife was into BUYING crafty things but not making them. His girlfriend doesn't have any hobbies or ambition to find one...lol. My 17 year old daughter is in Culinary Arts in high school and she is an excellent cook and baker. But...she also loves to sew and I had told her I would give her my present machine when I buy a new one. Now she's not sure since she said she doesn't know when she will have time to sew between school and working...we'll see. She wanted me to teach her how to knit...that didn't go very well. She was getting it here and then I sent her home with yarn and a pair of needles and she said she screwed it up. If she still wants to learn, I will show her again later. Right now she is getting ready to be in a cooking competition in Lancaster County...her teachers begged her to do it since they have said she's the best student they have ever had in Culinary. That sure was great to hear. It's a day long thing where she has to make a cake from scratch and then decorate it. I would love to see it but...no parents or grandparents allowed.

My daughter is not interested in crafts of any kind, but her daughter, my only blood grandchild is very interested in crafty things and likes sewing. We have made several things together. I love it.

I can relate to your excitement. I have two boys and I dream of a future "daughter" that I can share these types of things with.

That is wonderful you have someone to share your passion with. I have 2 sons & both DDIL don't care for sewing or crafts. After 3 DGS I have a 4 yr old DGD. So, I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

It's so fun to see someone who is interested and just learning. My daughter isn't very interested in anything about sewing or crafts. Seems like so many of the younger kids aren't interested in anything but "hanging out" and texting. Makes me more excited to see someone who is interested. Fun to teach our hobby.

Ginny, that is wonderful! My son got engaged on Christmas Eve, so the girlfriend is now future DIL! She started sewing a little and using one of my embroidery machines and I helped her make her first ever quilt as a gift for her father. She liked it so much that we bought her a sewing machine for Christmas. I just think it is wonderful to be able to pass something on and create a bond with her in this way. Hope you enjoy your time with her and sewing together.

Good for you passing on the love of fabric to a youger person. It's great that she has you to share with.

I feel the same way you do. I am teaching my 3 granddaughters to sew and we have so much fun! I love it. Christmas was hard this year, I had absolutely no money to spend. So I made them cute insulated lunch bags with handles and a drawstring cover, a matching insulated water bottle holder and headbands. I was feeling bad because everything was "home made" but, they were a great hit, everybody loved them! I included in their cards an "invitation" to "GrandmaLola's Hair Accessory Workshop", and today we are all getting together (each Granddaughter has her own sewing machine) and I'm teaching them to make the headbands and a few other things.

These are the best times of my life. I'm passing on a creative skill they will have all their lives, and we are making family "moments to remember" that will also last our lifetimes! Enjoy!

I have been showing my husband some things about sewing. He has made a dress (very simple) for his granddaughter and a vest for his grandson. He has decided that piecing a quilt is not his thing. He doesn't get along with all the exactness in the process and he is very impatient! I am very proud of him and love being able to help him with his sewing. He is truly an exceptional man. A real keeper!!

Something to think about for those who want to mentor and don't have someone close, is looking into the kids at risk in your local school programs and seeing if you can't connect with someone there. Often all those kids need is someone to take an interest in them and show a little caring and spend some time with them one on one.
Teaching them a skill is a great way to do that.

Two daughters with no interest in any type of sewing. Two older granddaughters with no interest in sewing.:( BUT, I have a new granddaughter born 10/11/11 and my hope hinges on her. I have high hopes of her learning to sew and I will do my best to cultivate those hopes! :) Somebody needs to show some interest in all of my quilting/sewing stuff 'cause I can't live forever and I need someone to pass it on to!!

My daughter and granddaughter are both into crafts of various kinds. My daughter doesn't sew clothes or quilt, but she can sew drapes, cover a couch or any other type of upholstered furniture and remodel coffee tables, etc. My granddaughter is studying art as well as business in college. I'm glad you have someone to share your love of crafting.

I guess I am lucky two future DDil's are interested one is on the go by herself with making quilts My granddaughter I taught at age 6 made her first quilt and got a new machine for Christmas One of my grandsons made a quilt for his little brother at 6 years of age.

For those of you who are rearing sons right now don't think you have to wait for DIL to do crafty things. I had 4 sons. Two of them loved auto mechanics, so I learned to do engine repair with them. Most of the time I assisted, but I was there; we were talking - I knew what was going on in their lives, I wasn't left out. One other son became a musician and all I could do was sit and listen to him play as I can't even keep time listening to a drum solo. LOL The last son was into everything - taught me to ride a motorcycle among other things. Don't think there aren't things to share with sons. Sewing and quilting will be there after the sons have left home; they are only there a few short years with you. Learn to do what they are interested in.

I taught my DIL, before she and my son were married or even thinking of marriage, how to do counted cross stitch and she loved doing it. They now have two little boys and she has branched out into knitting, scrap booking, and is learning to sew. She will eventually start quilting as both her mother and I do it.

Luck to the up and coming culinary student. Kudos to all crafty, sewing-inclined people. We all may need their skills one day. Interesting how those skills bypass some generations and show up later.

My granddaughters use to come sew with me until they moved. I really miss the great times we had in the sewing room.

jaciqltznok - Maybe you can find a Girl Scout troop and help them with one of their badges :) Just an idea.

Congratulations on the engagement! How wonderful of you to get her a sewing machine too. I gave my son's girlfriend one of the sewing machines I had here. She came over one weekend and I had her use a couple of sewing machines dh and I found in my sil's basement when we were cleaning it out after she died. I figured it would be best for her to try them out and pick the one she was most comfortable with.

My mom taught me alot about sewing and she continues to do so! We get together every Tuesday to sew. Tuesday is my favorite day of the week!
