Just how hard is it?
Okay, I have been sewing since I was 13. Which was.....oh.....let's just say more than 30 years ago ;)
But I have only been quilting a few years, and I feel I am a solid Intermediate Level. But always willing to jump in to anything and struggle through things if I like the pattern enough. I am leaning towards Hexi quilts. Just how hard are they?? Do I jump in or run for the hills? |
Hexies are not hard...do you like handwork? I'm sure you have checked out you tube.....so much more being done than gfg....my next project is going to be millefiorE. Not the one ending in I...have the book waiting for supplies from paperpieces
thr something small....check out site of sue Daley...she gave me the idea of glue basting.... |
I think if you want to do them then go for it. The only way to learn is to do it.
|
When you say Hexes, are you referring to the larger hexagons that can be easily stitch with large precut hexagon fabrics? Your seams allowances have to be accurate and stop on a specific point. Most smaller hexes are sewn using a technique called English paper piecing, different from paper piecing.
|
If you are talking about the small hexagons that are sewn together by hand. They are more fiddly, putsy-dutsy, than difficult.
Ever wonder why we say machine sewn or hand sewn - when it is actually sewn with thread that is guided by a machine or a hand? |
Check out you tube, a friend makes hexi quilts on her machine. looks fine.
|
I say jump in and make some - you will know soon enough if it's for you. We have a saying around our house. "it's easy when you know how"
|
i'm doing one using the english paper piecing method. I have to be methodical but that's a good thing. I consider myself a novice quilter. Been sticking with it for 13 months now.
|
Hm....I may have to check that out then.

my daughter wanted a double bed size grandmothers garden. I let her pic the fabrics at many many shops. she EPP the flowers, but putting it all together and handquiltng was a BIG job. But she loves it. So go for it, but stay small. Lamp doily or table runner or dresser scarf. That is enough to learn and be skillful.
