We are always making quilts for family and friends. But, have you ever noticed that members of quilting clubs never make a quilt for each other? Is it because we think that since they make them, they wouldn't enjoy getting one from someoneelse? I've given several quilts as gifts, but even I am guilty of not giving any to my quilting friends. Am I alone? Or have you noticed this too? In fact, nobody has ever given me a quilt. My MIL gave me several tops. But not one that was finished and all ready to cuddle in. Maybe we all think that since they quilt, they could easily make their own and wouldn't want one someoneelse made. I don't know about you, but I'd kinda like to have one that a friend made for me. I think it would still mean a lot that they thought enough to give me one, even though I have 25 or so of my own. Have you ever noticed this or am I the lone ranger???

I gave my best friend and quilting buddy a quilt for her wedding present. I haven't given myself one, yet. Not a whole one that I did all of like hers.

My mother has made all 4 of her children and all the grandchildren quilts and she told me she wanted me to make her and my dad one for Christmas. I told her I thought she had made them one, and she said she had, but it was not the same as one that I made. So I am going to make theme one.

Our sewing group has several times made a quilt for another member, sometimes because of illness, sometimes because of a new grandchild.

I never thought of that! I think you are right. I never think to give a quilt to a quilt maker! But i always think others do better work than me!

I got one from my quilt group when I moved to Syracuse. It's beautiful. I need to post it sometime. Five years later we moved back to Columbus and I asked the group if I had to give it back. We all had a good laugh :D That's the only quilt I've been given (that was made just for me) and I have to say I've never given another quilter a quilt, but have given blocks for a quilt. |
Have never been given a quilt...but we have done a lot of exchanges, making blocks for each other, fabric swaps for specific projects, round robins, etc...but, yes, it would be nice to have quilts from each other...our group is large though...there are 12 of us...so it could take awhile to make one for everyone!

I find that I give quilted items to those who don't quilt. I think it's because I figure if you know how to quilt, you can always make yourself one. That even applied to my granddaughters. I didn't make them quilts because their mother (my daughter) quilts. I crocheted them afghans instead. But I've learned the error of my thinking, at least with them, and am in the process of making them each a quilt.

15 years ago when I belonged to Genie Online Quilters we had secret pals. For my birthday that year my secret pal made me a beautiful blue and white double Irish Chain quilt. I cried for days everytime I thought about it. We did not know each other, just chatting and doing swaps online. It was just the sweetest most unexpected gift I have ever received.

It is true we don't usually give a quilt to a fellow quilter. My best friend, who has now past away, once said to me, you know you've made a quilt for all your friends except me. She felt a little sad about this and then it wasn't long after that she was diagnosed with cancer and passed away within 6 months. Took her comment too lightly at the time but have thought about it several times since. Guess when a quilt just reminds us of a certain we should give it to them whether they quilt or not.

I made one that I am raffeling off at my guild starting in April. All the $ will go to my guild and some one in my guild will win it.

I have made several to auction off during my womens club twice yearly fund raiser, but so many of the ladies quilt that I sometimes feel that if I gave them a quilt when they were my secret pals that it wouldn't measure up to the ones they could do for themselves, although I have been a quilter for 25 years, I am still insecure about my skills as a quilter

We just finished up doing 2 memory quilts for two of our ladies in the sewing club.
The first one was done with siggy stars from us all and I did up a star with her picture in the center of the star. This was for her birthday(95th). And believe it or not she still drives herself and also is on a bowling league yet. She is our oldest member and our quilt police. No nagging but VERY informative for us newbies. The second quilt was made the same for another member who just turned 92. She has been feeling under the weather lately and we thought she needed one. Both were very much appreciated and they both had tears in their eyes when they received them. That made our day just watching their reactions . |
DM and I are both quilters. The other day she said, you have never made me a quilt! I felt really bad. Now I am going to have to get busy and make her one!!! She has never actually made one for me, but she did give DH one that we keep on our bed- I guess you can say it is "ours".

I never thought about it ... I have made quilts for family and new babies and grandbabies of friends, but I have never even thought about making one for my quilting friends before. I guess I thought they could make their own. I'll be thinking about that.

Our group makes quilts for people who leave our area, everyone makes a 12.5" block what ever they want and we put it together for our friend. It's always turned out nicely. Once we make a quilted book and everyone made a block 7"x12" and it was put togethe with ribbon on the sides. It turned out really cool. |
My MIL gave us a quilt for our wedding present and she owns a quilting business. But I would never make her one, because I would be afraid she would see my mistakes.

My friend's mother's quilt club/quilt did this. taking turns as to who's quilt they worked on.. 1980's.
The quilt I am involved, as a thankyou and appreciation, we do work of the president as she leaves office. Mine is more of a show and tell, always a program, wonderful presentations, authors of books explainging their work, historical presentations on quilts or fabrics or local and national exhabits. Always quilts are made for community efforts, cancer patents, hospitals, veterns. So, maybe you need to look around, hopefully you live in an area where you may have a choice and a quilt that fits your own personality. Good luck, Ell |
