ArtquilterNEWWAYtoQUILT 11-15-2007 06:43 AM

:? :( Yes It was bought by wm co. but most towns like ours don't have one!!!!!

Rebecca Chambley 11-15-2007 08:18 AM

I had heard this rumor several months back, but it has not been confirmed, and if you ask the Walmart employee, as I have. They say that they haven't heard anything about it. So it's like a drum role waithing for the answer.

refibered 11-15-2007 08:53 AM

Will be interesting to see how this shakes out....if it's true, I'd imagine WM paid attention to those petitions and figured out that it'd be worth their time to actually sell fabric and notions...duh!

A lady at Wal Mart fabric area in our town told me about it several months ago. Who knows what will happen.

bj 11-15-2007 12:16 PM

I was stuck watching the financial channel with dh and they were saying WM is one of the few companies finishing strong this year because of their restructuring inventory. Made me pretty mad! Especially for those of you out there with limited choices for fabric shopping, because they probably won't change their minds about carrying fabric in all stores.

zyxquilts 11-15-2007 01:45 PM

I just checked the Jo-Ann's website & found my way to the corporate section - the only new thing is that they acquired full ownership of the joann.com website. They have NOT been bought by WalMart. Since they are a publicly traded company (JAS on the stock market), it would have showed up in a search if they had indeed been bought out.

quilterj 11-17-2007 09:05 PM

a couple weeks ago i was at one of the wm and an employee told me that they are one of them that has alot of fabric. he said that he heard that they weren't going to loose it because it was selling there. so i hope not. but when i talk to others every where else. they say yes it is nation wide. i too had heard about joanns but haven't heard anything through the grapevine at the stores. like someone said i guess we will just have to wait and see what happens. they just don't want to hear what we have to say they are going to do things their way anyhow.

nor'easter 11-18-2007 05:10 AM

WallMart shareholders have received no notification of even a proposed buyout of JoAnn's. I put no stock in the rumor...pun intended! :D

DonnaRae 11-18-2007 06:46 AM

Hey you know what? Maybe if Wally World (aka WalMart) did buy out JoAnn"s there could be a JoAnns in every town like Wally World. Nice thought for those of us that don't have a JoAnn's. :D

ArtquilterNEWWAYtoQUILT 12-01-2007 11:55 AM

:? Well WM had my email and Joanne did not and Now I get Joanne emails and I delete them!!!!! so J had to get it fro wm.

QuiltingTexAlltheTime 01-13-2008 08:54 PM

 I think this one is true as wm had my email and Joanne didn't then all the sudden I start getting Joanne emails. So I Delete them!!!

newquiltertoni 01-14-2008 06:12 PM

Just to put in my two cents worth. I am in Managment at our local walmart and this definitely isn't anything I have heard of. The only thing I do know is that yes they are doing away with the fabric dept. in areas that don't sell as much. Like in my town we have no other fabric shop so ours will stay but some of the bigger towns that has competition like hobby lobby, joanns or moniques they will probably do away with it. Just thought I would pass on what I know.

Wouldn't THAT be nice!

I don't believe the Walmart/Joanns thing is true, though. Too bad! I will miss our Walmart fabric when it's gone!

Just a note as to unexpected e-mails. Like junk mail of the paper variety, lists are sold/traded between companies and information brokers. Usually, this is on the terms of use in your registration for the original site you registered to - often phrased as "business partners".

Contests, websites, "survey sites" are all just big data collection devices. I'm sure I am not the only one who came across the "free quilt patterns" that were 45 minutes of data entry, leading, not to free patterns, but to spam.

I was recently in a Wal-Mart Super store in the Eastern Panhandle of WV. The Fabric Dept appears to have been expanded. They have one long wall of fabrics, then 3 free standing aisles with bolts on end, on both sides of the aisles. I don't ever recall seeing this store have so MUCH fabric. There was no one to talk to or ask, but I have a feeling this store will be keeping its fabric department for a while.

Has anyone else observed changes in their fabric department locally?

Our Walwart is about that size, It sells so fast they have trouble keeping it full..........two and 3 dollar fabric especially

Steve 01-15-2008 10:06 AM

I mentioned this long-standing rumor to a Joanne’s employee the other day and with a chilled shutter she exclaimed, “Let’s hope not!”

Yup, that about sums it up.

june6995 01-15-2008 10:48 AM

It does not make any sense at all.

First Wal-Mart shut down their fabrics departments.

Then buy JoAnn and send them a bunch of crap? Is this a consipiracty to kill the American creative spirit?

And like someone said....their stock holders would surely have had to vote and be informed about this. I too have looked at Snopes and can find no evidence. Rumor is just that. Rumor. GOSSIP!!!

DonnaRae 01-15-2008 10:54 AM

I posted before that I have four Walmarts within driving distance and all still have fabric. These stores can't keep fabric in long enough. Always selling out. I still can not understand why Walmart decided in the first place to get rid of the sewing depts. supposely to bring in packaged crafts? Even in stores where the sales were not very high the fabric was a good leader (industry term, something that brings more customers in). All I can think about is a bunch of ninety year olds that have done nothing but been catered to all their lives with never picking up a needle making this grand decision. Of course I know this is not what happened, but geez whoever was the grand idiot should be in this group. Especially at a time when sewing was getting so popular and still is. It just totaly baffles me about how such poor decision makers with obviously no common sense gets put in the position to be making these decisions. But somehow it seems to always happen. Geez I am on a rant today. Maybe a nap will do. I think I will put the covers over my head and make the world go away, well just for a little while, I realy love this world.

MelissaK 01-15-2008 10:58 AM

I was at walmart the other day and the woman in the fabric dept told me that corporate sent out a letter stating that they could not order fabric any more and that the store was going to be remodeled in April and the fabric would no longer be there. I was obviously very upset!

june6995 01-15-2008 11:12 AM

Melissa, there are lots of us who will join you in being upset.

Two stores I visit here in Cincinnati were slated to close after the first of the year. Since I have not been in either store, I have no idea what is going on . Once I know, I will check back.

Complaining just did not help, and nearly 40,000 of us did.

Who cares about customers.!?!!!

KATHY D 01-15-2008 05:17 PM

I also think they look at how much money the larger fabric departments bring in. If they have more fabric etc. they need more people to work in that department. More people more cost as far as wages, any benefits etc. If they lose some sells, they have made up for it by letting alot of people go or cut hours. All part of "Lean" that all companies are going to.

azdesertrat 01-15-2008 05:32 PM

when this rumor first started awhile back I had gone to Joanns and asked them and they said no.Like zyxquilts said it is a publicly traded company and the fact that Walmart would have aquired another big company like Joanns would have made the news

june6995 01-15-2008 05:54 PM

Good comment! I agree with whoever said that. So we need to take this stuff with a grain of salt.

What is going on with Hancock and their restructure? Does anyone know?
The past 3 times I have gone in their store, I left, reminding myself NOT to go back. I don't like a thing and see, and among other things, those tiny little Made in China labels really stand out as if they were RED!!!

azdesertrat 01-15-2008 06:05 PM

I talked to the manager at the Hancocks here in town and he said"The home sewing industry is changing, very few people make thier own clothes anymore, and a lot of fabric suppliers are going out of business" He did say that they are bringing in more home decor items,I do not think that means cotton fabrics or fleece,as for making quilts and blankets but stuff like chiffons and taffeta and things like that, they are trying to stay in business but they have to change

Rebecca Chambley 01-16-2008 08:33 AM

PssssT
Tell him if they have to change, then they need to take QUILTING more seriously.

DonnaRae 01-16-2008 02:49 PM

I seriously don't know where that manager gets his info. It is all over the news, and I just saw some info on Good Morning America that sewing and quilting are at an all time high. Even young people are getting in to the act making and designing their own clothes especially on the designing part. Making purses and even shoes is really popular now. So maybe Hancocks just has to look at the sewers in a different way, and yes concentrate on the quilter because quilting, and applique are also very popular along with embroidery. And to stay in business they probably need to gear there fabric towards the younger people. If you look at the fabric at hancocks, it is either very babyish or for the work women. Not much for the younger crowd. See on a rant again. Back to under the blankets for me.
We are expecting snow in the next couple of hours and by tomorrow it is suppose to be freezing rain and sleet. YUK YUK. Well as long as we don't lose power all is fine with me because I'll just sew. :-)

We in Barnwell SC has no fabric shop with in 50 miles- we have to go to Augusta, GA. or Columbia SC. for fabric and wally world took all fabric out of their stores in Orangeburg, Barnwell and Aiken, SC. Figure that out.

Guess it was a rumor.

C.Cal Quilt Girl 07-30-2010 11:08 PM

Here 2 stores no fab 1 store with fab, because they remo'd before the decision, and because no other local source would available.
Somthing I was told long ago had to do w/hobbies, when the times are lean people, do more crafts, fishing, etc. When bad less, too busy working, have to wonder if these decisions aren't made well in advance, by folks that have never experienced these trends....
also think the variety of crafts have changed the industry, now beaders, paper crafts, wood, paint etc. to take up what once was a smaller selection of items, sewing, embroidery, Quilting, Knitting, We all want it all !!! :)
