Just want to share my excitement...

A week ago, I took a quilt to LQS for quilting. The usual turn-around is 2 weeks, but they called a couple of days ago to say it was ready. That was happy news! It's about 45 minutes away, so I took a friend with me to go pick it up (love it, will post pics after the binding is on) and we went to lunch.

On the way home, we decided to stop at a Mennonite store that was having an annual 15% off sale. I wasn't going to go - even on sale, I DO NOT NEED MORE FABRIC!!! But, you know how it is - you aren't far away and what the heck.

A quilt I'm working on is crazy big - it will be king-sized. I really hadn't thought about anything but the top when I started it. Now that the blocks are together and ready to be put into rows, though, I started thinking about the additional costs - batting, binding, quilting. Yikes!

Golden Lane has a clearance table, and I found enough of a fabric that was "okay." Not crazy about it, but hey, it's the back of the quilt. On sale for $3/yd!! As many places don't take additional discounts on clearance items, I thought it was going to be $3/yd - which still made me very happy. The discount was off of everything, though - so I got it for $2.55/yd! Oh my gosh, what a relief. Now I can afford the batting (which I'll purchase w/ a coupon, of course), lol.

nycquilter 02-25-2012 07:35 AM

don't you love when you need something and the powers that be provide it for you? YES!

LadyElisabeth 02-25-2012 05:35 PM

I'm sorry I live so far away! Sometimes it does pay to STOP at a LQS

Highmtn 02-26-2012 06:19 AM

Without a DOUBT a good score! The best...and I mean the BEST flannel I've ever purchased was some a QS had in a close out bin. I bought the whole bolt. It was a black/taupe and a wavy obnxious grid, but it's been on the back of many men's quilts and I tell ya.. it's still as thick and lush as the first day it was sewn on. I always ck the bargin bins for backing before paying full price.

craftymatt2 02-26-2012 07:16 AM

So happy for you, i love it when go in expecting to pay a lot and you come out with a great bargin, good for you. I am going to the paducah quilt show, i am hoping to come out with lots of bargins.

jaciqltznok 02-26-2012 08:03 AM

lucky you! I too found a bargain for a backing yesterday, it was a MODA for $3.00 yd. I don't care for Moda fabric, but for this backing, it was a great match, and it is NOT my quilt, so I was glad to find a bargain that matched!

gypsylady5 02-26-2012 08:09 AM

I love it when we find a good bargain. Fabric is so high priced now, that I have to really think seriously about if I want it or not. Generally, it is not!

jmabby 02-26-2012 08:14 AM

Great, anxious to see your posted quilt. If I may, when you show the front can you turn a corner up to see the back. I always wonder what others use for the backs. Thanks

caspharm 02-26-2012 08:43 AM

Shirlrh 02-26-2012 08:50 AM

Love those bargains!!

KathyKat 02-26-2012 09:56 AM

Good for you! It always seems to be such a shock when I go to buy backing because the fabric I really want will cost me $40-50!! Sometimes I've planned a quilt and purchased or found the fabric needed in my stash including the backing. Then as I'm making it I decide to add rows or more borders. Then when I start preparing the backing I see that it's not enough and realize that I've done it again....shot myself in the foot by improvising. It seems that's always the time I can't find any backing I want except something costly, LOL!

pippi65 02-26-2012 10:10 AM

Always nice to get a good deal on fabric these days!! Have fun with it!!

penski 02-26-2012 10:19 AM
