I've had a heck of a time with a paper-pieced block. If it wasn't one thing, than today has been another. I have a stack of fabric lined up to cut into more manageable sizes. I make my cut and to my dismay I have severed the tops off of some of the pieces that were already sewn.

I'm grumbling now, but at least I know I have enough fabric to fix the decapitated part. Maybe a break is in order now. No, I will go pet my cat.

Airwick156 05-30-2011 02:11 PM

Oh that just stinks tonnie. Good thing you have extra fabric. Pet your kitty for me.

clsurz 05-30-2011 02:11 PM

Ok put the cutter down before you go pet your cat.

Stitchnripper 05-30-2011 02:13 PM

I hate when that happens!! I don't paper piece but have done similar with rotary cutter.

blueangel 05-30-2011 02:16 PM

You need a break. I'm sure it is fixable.

huntannette 05-30-2011 03:22 PM

darn!!!

max's grandma 05-30-2011 03:32 PM

Been there and done that.

SharBear 05-30-2011 03:36 PM

ugh. i was there last night. tried to paper piece the same thing three times and made three different mistakes - decided it must be time for bed. Have been gardening, paying bills and doing groceries / laundry all day and now am clean and ready to try again!

wolfkitty 05-30-2011 04:16 PM

Night (not early evening) is never a good time for me to do anything that needs careful attention. I have a plaque that says "When all else fails, pet the cat." Is that what you were doing?

quiltyfeelings 05-30-2011 04:18 PM

I was gonna say you should stay away from the cat!

quiltyfeelings 05-30-2011 04:19 PM

Heee Heee Heee! Maybe she got Ditter!

DeneK 05-30-2011 04:29 PM

That was my morning with PP block... got it 3/4 sewn and realized that no way were the portions going to fit together. I put it away until tomorrow (or the next day). I think I need to try it with a lighter weight paper and a different sewing machine.

earthwalker 05-30-2011 05:29 PM

Rats! Time for a cup of tea, a slice of something nice and a "cat therapy session". Then back to it and you will zoom through with perfect cuts.

MadQuilter 05-30-2011 05:36 PM

Oh I have done that. Don't you just wanna kick yourself?

Kitty will make you feel better.

justwannaquilt 05-30-2011 06:01 PM

UGH! This is my biggest fear. I always try to put all my blocks away before making any cuts because of this fear. Pizza boxes makes it easy to put "up" and get back out.

DawnMarie 05-30-2011 06:07 PM

I had issues with a paper pieced block this morning too. I ended up stopping with all that, and now my back porch, bathroom, and kitchen have all been through "spring cleaning."
Maybe tomorrow....

star619 05-30-2011 06:12 PM

I found that if I trimmed (1/4")the fabric only (folding the paper pattern underneath) from the last seam I sewed, I didn't take off in the wrong direction so often.
Good luck!

Lol!!! Sorry about your misfortune

Painiacs 05-30-2011 07:28 PM

Having same problems!! Pieces not lining up!! Grrrrr

quiltingnana1 05-31-2011 04:12 AM

I am so sorry. Seems Murphy is alive and well in your sewing room. Take a break, giving him the opportunity to become bored and allowing him to move on. Glad you have enough fabric to replace your damaged blocks.

Grandma Peg 05-31-2011 04:15 AM

Just hate mistakes like that but thank goodness you have extra fabric. Take a little walk or break and it will go together the way it should. Good luck.

Eileen 05-31-2011 05:29 AM

I think that chocolate in needed or a nice glass of wine, if it's not to early.
Try again tomorrow.

Carol Doak has a yahoo group-go join it before you touch another paper piece (of fabric). Took a one day seminar with her last year and she explained how to measure that new piece of fabric so it won't be too small. It was a miracle! She also gives free new block patterns to group members regularly! (just love free quilt blocks-lol)
Just post your question to her group and you should get tons of helpful info.
Good luck,
Kat

Thinking like a Bear will get you in trouble every time :-D

Katts 14 05-31-2011 10:38 AM

or put the critter down in case she laughs too!

noahscats7 05-31-2011 05:45 PM

I know how you feel. On my 1st PP I even had to take one seam apart 3 times. Really felt dumb and it didn't help the paper very much either. It'll click and then you'll be on your way.

TXyankee 05-31-2011 06:25 PM

I'm having the same trouble with pp project. It's tiny little pieces, so at least I'm not wasting lots of fabric. Cat therapy always helps me! All I have to do is sit down and open a book. She does not like to share my lap with a book!

Teresa 54 06-01-2011 02:01 PM

sew, flip, iron then trim from the right side.trim underneath. never failed me yet.

Quilter2B 06-03-2011 08:06 PM

Awww, your heart must have sank! I haven't done that on the cutting board but when I embellished a top with some embroidery I found my border somehow got sucked onto the back and I had to trim off about a 1/3"; guess my skinny border is just going to have to be a little slimmer :0(
