If you love it that much, keep it, and make something else for the other person. There is nothing wrong with keeping something that means so much to you!

being able to quilt/sew is a gift for God, lots of people can't do it....you're not being selfish I have 5 of the 100's I've made.

So much love, so much thought, so many tiny victories and perhaps many larger failures as the work begins It is so absorbing. This goes until the completion of the quilt and then I realize how very affectionate I feel towards the quilt. Can't wait to pull it over my shoulders for a delighted snooze. Give it away! Oh NO! People really have very little time to give to really appreciate as in this world they are swiftly moving on to the next thing.I'll never forget that it took me two years, and three sessions of illness to professionally pull together my family history. The next year I went to a family wedding where all the recipients were and NOT ONE even mentioned it to me. I suspect that I might have done the same in years past. So I really can't fault human nature and the speed of life. But I can freely keep my quilting work.

Why can't you keep it. If you love it, it should be yours. No guilt!
|
Sure! You need a portfolio, right?

We are mad aren't we? Almost every quilt I make I want to keep at some point!!! Just OCCASIONALLY, why shouldn't we!!!
ITS YOUR QUILT!!! would love to see it! |
I've been asked if I ever keep a quilt for my self and
the answer is always no. That is until I went shopping this week and found the most beautiful fabric. At that moment I knew I was going to use this to make my self a quilt. I'm so excited about this and can hardly wait to get started. Betty Lee |
I once made a baby quilt for a gift and decided to put it in the fair, it won a blue ribbon, so I was NOT going to give it away. Made another one for the gift. Keep this one and make another.
|
I saw keep it if you really love it. too often I make things and give them away, as do most of the others here. now at 59, I have had a couple of years of intense making, mostly knit and crochet, for those close to me (had this weird feeling that I wanted them to have something to remember me by!) but now I want to do a couple of things that I have wanted to do for years, always waiting until my skills were good enough or I had more time to do it right, etc., am sure most of you are familiar with this feeling! not going to wait for skill buildup, not going to wait for more time, and NOT going to give it away....good luck!
|
Just the fact that the thought entered your mind to keep it means it is calling to you. I did the same when we were dividing my grandmother's quilts. There was a scrap ocean wave that I remember almost every fabric being someone's garment. I kept it.
|
I was making a baby quilt for my niece, hoping for a girl, I made it in pinks and lavendars. It is so pretty in pastel flowers. Found out she having a BOY. Yea, now I can keep the quilt. We do grow attached after so much hard work.

My quilts speak to me. They tell me who they should go to. This quilt is speaking to you. Keep it and make another for your gift.

I have a question. Why does one feel quilty?

I wonder that too! I think we should make stuff for us FIRST, then gift as the need arises. After I get the tops quilted for my DGK's, I'm planning on making some baby quilts with no one in mind. That way, when someone needs one, I just pull from inventory. That way I get the enjoyment of making a quilt and choosing to give away or keep. I like to make mine 45 x 60, which also makes a nice lapquilt. Dual purpose  |
My DDIL and I have very similar tastes and I've bought her presents that I've kept! I've even told her and we've shared some good laughs.
|
It's not a gift until you give it away, and if it never leaves your possession how can you possibly feel bad? Make another quilt for that other person and keep what you love!
|
I had to smile. Just this week i finished a Christmas lap quilt for an upcoming wedding. It was beautiful - so nice I decided to keep it. They will never know their quilt is the second choice. I haven't started it yet, or even purchased the fabric, but it will be just as nice with different fabrics.

I have a lot of tops made, but haven't got them put together to send off to the quilter yet. As you all know its really expensive to have your tops machine quilted and then when you give it away, WHAT IF THEY DON'T REALLY LOVE IT!!??? That's the part I have trouble with. Quilts are quite color and pattern and mood specific. Perhaps you haven't captured their preferences and it doesn't fit in their home? It's easy to make baby quilts and quilts for kids, but to make a quilt for adults is another matter. They are usually very picky!

Nobody even knows that you 'intended' that particular quilt for anyone else (unless you tell them) so why agonize over it... Just say, "I made this one for myself"... (see how easy that is LOL) |
Don`t feel guilty. So easy to get attached to quilts. You made it. You deserve it. Eventually we have to let some go. I`ve given several as gifts, But still holding on to some. Bessie

Keep the quilt! Go to Wal Mart and get her a gift card. She will be so happy that u were kind enough to think of her at all.....plus maybe in a couple of years u can make her a baby or lap quilt :) If u need to rationalize, then winter is on the way...and it could be a very cold winter! brrrrr

and thinking about it again, there have been a metric ton of things over the years that I have made intentionally for myself but when done, it has CLEARLY been intended for someone else, unconsciously or by the Fate's design. matter of fact last time was about six weeks ago, I finished a shawl and realized about six rows into that it was for a friend of my daughter's!

I say keep it and make another one.

I have given away quilts and that is always hard. I made a quilt of dogwood, I painted the pink on the blossoms, I applicated the flowers and leaves and stems, made pillow shams to match and it was gorgeous. I made it with my niece in mind. When I gave her her graduation presents I was so disappointed! She wants to be an elementary school teacher so I got nice boxes from Office Depot, covered them with some really nice wrapping paper and filled them with teacher things. A parachute, some Little Golden Books, holiday decorations, 25 rolls of ribbon, 20 sponge brushes, bulletin board cutouts and paint and markers. I was so excited, I had been collecting this stuff for 4 years and I was so into this gift. My niece opened 3 boxes full of treasures and with no emotion said "thank you". I was crushed. I really put a lot of time and energy and creativity aand I knew if she responded to the quilt like that I would probably make a scene that would put Scarlett O'Hara to shame ! Yes my niece is quiltless and I refuse to feel guilty. I have taped to my refrigerator this saying and I believe it. "Sometimes it's okay to be selfish".

My new rule after reaching a certain age is that there are very few rules in life that really matter. (as long as they are legal & don't hurt anybody). You know what I mean. If you want to keep it, keep it. In time, you may be ready to part with it but if you like it, KEEP it. You know you'll appreciate & love it more than anybody in the world. |
Well, I'm amazed that I am not in this boat alone. I am making a hand appliqued quilt of cats from Darcy Ashton's book. I have spent endless hours working on it (of course, it still is not finished) and I wanted to give it to my sister-in-law who took care of my cats (and dogs) after I moved away from the small town where we both lived. My husband, her brother, developed Alzhimers (spelling) and I moved away and brought him to the city where all my children lived so they could help me. Anyway, I keep thinking will I part with this when I finish? I really want to give it to her, but she is in ill health and the person that would inherit this quilt is her only son who, in my opinion, wouldn't deserve to have it. BUT, I probably will finish it up and give it to her. She would be so tickled and proud. But I cetainly thought about keeping it. ha ha

I say keep it.

I say keep it! the recipient will never know and I'm sure will appreciate another one just as much! You Go Girl!!!

There is no such thing as quilty in quilting. See how the two words start out with the same 5 letters? I think that if you made a quilt and worked really hard on it and fell in love with it then you would feel more guilty if you gave it away. If you have the time to make another one for a gift then go for it. I made a baby quilt and pillow for someone who I worked with for a month and I regret that I didn't take any pictures and I wish I had kept it for someone in my family as it was with penguins and a fabulous aray of colors that I will never be able to duplicate.

If you love the quilt then I say keep it & don't feel guilty. The person you was making it for will love the second one just as much as the first.
|
no you are not after all you made it and the person that will be recieving the quilt didnt specify what kind they wanted in this case so you are off te hook,
